MLB jerseys to be used to make masks and gowns

Baseball jersey fabric is going to the front lines of the fight against coronavirus.

In an effort to help mitigate the national shortage of personal protective equipment that has become a pressing issue for healthcare workers and emergency personnel battling the COVID-19 outbreak, Fanatics, the company that manufactures the official uniforms for Major League Baseball, is taking the raw materials typically used in the creation of MLB jerseys and instead using them to create masks and hospital gowns. MLB and Fanatics are absorbing all costs associated with the endeavor.

“We hope this effort can play a part in coming together as a community to help us through this challenging situation,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

Fanatics has halted jersey assembly, instead using its 360,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Easton, Pa., to create up to 1 million masks and gowns, with plans to produce these items as long as the need exists. The distribution of the equipment has begun throughout the state of Pennsylvania and will extend across New Jersey and New York, which has become the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States.

The initial masks and gowns have been made from the jerseys of the Phillies and Yankees -- complete with each club’s recognizable pinstripes. As production and distribution expands, other team jersey materials will be utilized.

Gee, and Trump didn't even have to invoke the National Defense Production Act to get them to do it.

This is great, and we should all applaud it, but what if you don't have a sewing machine? What if you want an N-95 mask, but they are all sold out?

What matters is the HEPA cloth filter, not how it attaches to your face.

I don’t know if I’d trust a mask from an Astros jersey.

I tend to keep a box of the 3M Cool Flow N95 masks (10-pack) around for sheetrock work, cutting stone or brick, working in the attic (insulation), maybe a heavy pollen day when we’re outside. I have yet to break one out for The Virus. Not saying I won’t, but not yet.

I did see a couple of oriental ladies at Sam’s yesterday...both with masks. Knowing what I know about wearing one while working...I shivered at how nasty they probably already were.

“Almost no vacuum cleaners require a bag anymore.”

That’s not true.

My Ol’ Bag vacuums once a week, whether the house needs it or not!

Mine does require a bag and they’re becoming increasingly difficult to find. All of the ones currently for sale direct the dirt into plastic cups.

I know what you mean. We still have an old Eureka upright that requires one of those long paper bags. Probably had it for 30 years. Had to replace a few rubber drive belts, but it runs great. I loaded up on (hoarded) bags many years ago. When they’re gone...probably looking at a new vacuum.

Aren’t athletic shirts supposed to be a light, airy breathable fabric?

Why would you make a mask out of non-breathable fabric?

As an ER nurse, I can critique this jury-rigged mask with one word: Nope.

It has gaps. You have to have a way to effectively seal all contact points with the face. Just one gap- a tiny one- is all it takes to allow a virus into your respiratory tract.

That is why, every year, we are fit-tested for N-95 use. Guys with beards (like me) are not allowed to wear them and must use CAPRs when providing any care for patients with highly-contagious respiratory infections.

You will also notice that N-95 masks are pre-contoured to fit the face. You can't just cut something out and mash it up into some semblance of a mask. You may as well wear a bandana for all the good that this jury-rigged bad joke will do you.

Stupid, uninformed crap like this is what gets credulous people killed.

Now that right there is funny!

From what I've read the idea is to put some of these makeshift masks over the N95s to make them last longer.

Okay, so wear some thing perfect, or go barefaced on a packed subway.

Which would you choose, as a civilian without a perfect N-95 mask?
