Raleigh city worker becomes NC's second coronavirus death

DUNN, N.C. — A Raleigh city employee has died from COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus.

Adrian Grubbs, who was in his 30s and lived in Harnett County, died Wednesday, his wife said. He suffered from high blood pressure, she said, and state officials said the underlying medical condition put him at higher risk from the virus.

"He was a good man. He was a great man, a loving husband, a devoted father, a great leader," his wife said. "All this happened so fast."

Grubbs became sick on March 13 and immediately quarantined himself inside the family's Dunn home, his wife said. An initial test for the coronavirus was inconclusive, and results from a second test didn't come back for more than a week.

"Between Monday and Wednesday [last week], it was like a light switch. His temperature was going up and down," she said. "One minute, he was feeling OK. The next minute, he was feeling bad."

High Blood Pressure is an issue?

There are drugs for that, along with lifestyle changes.

Evidently high blood pressure is a risk factor for the covid 19 virus. Had heard that previously but this is the first time I have read of someone this young dying from the virus plus the underlying condition of High Blood Pressure.

Yes, that’s the main reason I posted this.

In his thirties.

That age group had thought they were not at risk.

I believe that a particular medication for high blood pressure is being investigated as a possible accelerator of Covid-19. It is the angiotension converting enzyme inhibitor medications, that is the ACE inhibitors. Usually end with the suffix ‘pril’ as in Lisinopril. Check with doctor!

Statistics says that NOBODY has a risk of Zero.

That’s the way it works.

An Individual has an outcome of one or zero.

Tough to bet against the House and win every time.

So it’s not the high BP, it’s the drug[s].

Actually not that rare, especially in certain high risk people groups of which this man may have been.

"Check with doctor!"

Good luck with that. I think that it might be better check with Dr. Google. I took Lisinopril for years, until I got fed up with the dry, hacking cough, a known side effect of that drug. I eventually weaned myself of all permanent prescriptions.

Haven’t you noticed how many of the “youngish” are also “fattish”? That frequently means hypertension.

On the one hand, “This can’t happen to me because I’m not (fill in category), like that dead person!” is a widespread coping mechanism. On the other hand, there are characteristics that result in a higher risk of infection, serious illness, and death.

The point about blood-pressure medication will be very interesting, if it is accurate.

One category of drugs ACE inhibitors are thought to ake it easier for the virus toattack the lungs. I have been trying to get my doc to change my meds but she says there is not enough evidence.

Nobody said they weren’t at risk.

Younger folks are at less risk.

Older, underlying at more risk.

Life is risky. And nobody gets out of alive.

Do what you can to manage your personal risk, and soldier on.

And, BTW, the family can say the victim was healthy. That doesn’t mean he was.

The good docs reminded their patients of this possible reaction.

Also, they warned us not to use NSAIDS to reduce fever.

One of sons was not diagnose/tested for this virus. His FP in late Feb. told him not to take Advil to reduce his fever..
