This is the second US County Map.
Thanks to whoever turned me on to 1point3acres.com and
another who suggested that I incorporate population densities.

Not sure how current your data is but Jefferson County Alabama has 91 cases but isn’t in blue.
But Jennifer Rubin told me more Republicans were gonna die due to downplaying Covid. Your map shows democrat enclaves with more infections. I’m so confused?
Data was entered in yesterday, map produced this morning.
I just verified your number with my data source and 91 is correct.
It takes me about 5 hours to collect the data and about 1 hour to generate the map.
Things change fast as new cases emerge. The next map should reflect those numbers.

Thats how my original map looked but someone suggested applying the numbers based on population density.
Hitting liberal enclaves hardest. That would be population destiny.

Thank you for adjusting for population to show the ‘per capita’ prevalence of the spread!!!
If done properly, I feel like that makes the map much more accurate for where the virus is spreading (at least according to tests).
This map still seems to show the highest density of cases in the most populous urban areas. Again, if it was done properly to compensate for population, that suggest the virus spreads much more easily in urban areas, which actually makes a lot of common sense.
Also, you can see some very large population centers that are relatively less effected than other large pop. centers. Houston seems to be faring quite well, as one example.
Also, Chicago is bigger than detroit, but look at how it appears to be doing slightly better than Detroit right now on the map.
Have you asked for API access to 1point3acres’s data? I wonder if you can automate some of that 5 hours of work if you can download the data.

They will. Count on it.
As the size of the counties affects the coloring of a given area it can appear more or less affected. For example Las Vegas may look worse than it really is when compared to a smaller more dense area.
I’m still working out the algorithms to get a more accurate representation.

Okay, yeah, I just noticed that you only displayed density with the different color set.
What form do you have your data in? If it’s in a spread sheet, you should be able to add a new field/column for population. Then in a third column divide the case data by the population data to get the prevalence per capita.
They have a team working on data aquisition and I’m sure they are quite busy.

I’m sure there are legions of green eyeshade people frantically crunching numbers. God Bless them. The only part of our economy that’s working are the people who chase contacts and report data to the data entry people. Just absolutely unprecedented.

My plan is to get all my algorithms right while they are collecting data and occasionally generating maps to test it. Right now, data is sketchy at best. When the numbers are more reliable, I will produce a time series of maps to illustrate the spread of the virus across the US.
