Last week, the first volunteers in a study of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine received their first doses, and the vaccine’s developer, Moderna Therapeutics, is already thinking ahead. Although testing on the vaccine will take at least a year to complete, the work could provide valuable information about how the immune system can fight coronaviruses and could give scientists a head start if any new outbreaks of the virus were to occur.
Non-essential staff at Moderna Therapeutics’ manufacturing facility, in Norwood, Mass., including president Dr. Stephen Hoge, are working from home as recommended by public health officials, but those involved in manufacturing what may be the first vaccine against the novel coronavirus are ready to scale up production if the first phase of testing on the vaccine shows that it’s safe.
The vaccine will be studied first in a group of 45 healthy volunteers, who have not been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. In this group, scientists are looking to see if the shots are safe, and to test three different dosages to see which seems to activate the strongest immune response. If these initial subjects don’t develop any severe side effects or reactions, then researchers will recruit hundreds more healthy volunteers to confirm those results,
For the first phase, Moderna shipped hundreds of vials of the test vaccine to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is overseeing the study in multiple centers in the US. For the next, says Hoge, “it will be several fold, maybe five-fold larger than the first phase. We are talking thousands of vials.”
And if the vaccine proves not just safe, but also successful, the company is preparing for an anticipated “incredible demand to scale up the vaccine very, very quickly,” Hoge says,

Ugh.
Git ‘er Done.
And quickly too.
“Although testing on the vaccine will take at least a year to complete”
That’s the problem right there. Someone like Trump needs to get in the middle of an testing program in the US and say “you have one month”.
If peeps are swapping serum, some others might volunteer to get hit with the vaccine a bit “prematurely”.
All without congress spending a any money or passing a single law.
RE: All without congress spending a any money or passing a single law.
Ahhh but wait — you have the FDA that needs to approve it. And approval will take MONTHS as safety and side effects are evaluated ( not to mention effectiveness ).
I believe that the more vaccine’s a person take then the more they become a democrat.
Agree, banning something safe, effective and long-tested for something that might really be a dud. This is the worst of our bureaucrats who brought the CDC delay in the first place.
People who die or get incredibly sick from today forward are building a case and these cases will come to roost. The best time to use zinc-based interventions is at the very beginning before long-term damage is done. These people know this. Doctors are hoarding supplies because they know this, so who does it serve to let people get sick and die by the thousands and hundreds when we already know what to do.
It’s fine that they test this stuff, but its criminal to hold up hydroxychloroquine + zinc waiting for this stuff. This is a drug and a supplement that people are taking every day around the world, and the combo actually lowers the effective dose needed for both. But the best time to administer is in the first day of infection.
Trump is in a hurry.. hes always been in a hurry... i like that. gov works so slow.. nothing gets done slow... Trump: can you keep up...
they first said years.. and Trump put his brain in high gear, and who he knows on phone.. and wont stop working for us. .. he will get it done when others are thinking how to.
That settles it. America must be shut down until then. If we can protect just one life. So say the fools.
Wow, I feel better already! /sarc
