This virus is NO DEADLIER than the flu

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people on this thread will NOT eventually come to believe it.

Anybody with a brain had guns and ammo first.

And centuries ago.

I have no sympathy for those scrambling to buy now.

The stupid reap what they have sown.

The traffic in Wuhan is non existent. Not sure how much tamping they’re doing.

China is also fine breaking out 40 incinerators, burning bodies, lying to the world. They can take a million or two dead over the next six months and we have no clue what they’re actual numbers are.

Our media will have 24/7 panic coverage of bodies in the street, overflowing hospitals, etc.

Does make sense to let those under 40 back to work if they have no pre-existing conditions. Perhaps an antibody test. If you’ve had it, knowingly or not, you can return to work.

Keep those over 60 and vulnerable at home and work out an assistance plan for them.

There were stories last year the average American has less than $1000 in savings. Even with the one check people need to get back to work.

Herd immunity seems the only solution. People will die but that’s the cost of being part of a global economy.

Not sure any lessons have been learned from this. It seems a partisan political issue rather than any wake up call for American economic and medical independence.

disparity is for several reasons
1) airlifts into Calif bases raised awareness back in early Feb.
2) proximity to Wash/Oregon raised awareness in late Feb.
3) mandatory quarantines for over 12K int’l travelers thru airports
4) travel bans: China, Asia, Japan, Italy, etc.
5) strong southern border deterred disease flow
6) Republicans and non-urban folks have more common sense than younger city folk

“I have no sympathy for those scrambling to buy now.”

I understand and agree, but I am inherently against shutdowns and curtailments of individual liberty unless it is demonstrably for the common good! :)

Wuhan has been saying ‘opening up in a week’ for over a month now.

Have you seen the latest traffic monitors from wuhan?

https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/traffic-index/wuhan-traffic

Does this look like it’s open to you?

How long do you think it will take to bring back electronics manufacturing to the US? I say probably never due to labor costs.

the question is how long before you move those lines somewhere NOT affected by the virus?

Depends on how long the virus lasts...Oddly enough, other countries aren’t willing to collapse their healthcare systems to build our electronics right now...I can’t blame them.

The computer equipment you have now...may very well be the computer equipment you’ll have for a cpl years now.

This 40 something disagrees with your ‘risk’ notion:

https://www.nola.com/news/coronavirus/article_35531ff4-66d9-11ea-95b0-7797f71d169a.html

What do you think his medical bill will be?

If one of my hubby’s coworkers, or hubby, ‘wins’ that bill lottery, will you help us pay that?

Ha.

The death rates also assume maximum care.

Once ventilators run out (I posted weeks ago on this) the death numbers will skyrocket.

Actually we think Trump is about two weeks late. To be exactly on time would have required some auto trigger laws to have been enacted as soon as vectors from the viral breakout area were known to have flown to the US. Would have still taken a couple of days for the auto triggered laws to recognize and trigger. Could not have stopped the initial escape from Wuhan vector. For Trump to be one week behind he would have needed to be reading these threads. Unfortunately we ourselves are running one week behind reality of infection points.

He’s in a tough spot for sure, but has two choices: open the economy and crash the healthcare system - and shortly thereafter, the economy, OR crash the economy and try to preserve the healthcare system. Neither choice is “good”, but the answer SHOULD be obvious. It’s terrifying that he can’t see what is so blatantly clear.

Exactly. The economy never had a chance against COVID-19 in the short term, unless the hydroxychlorophine turns out to be a silver bullet.

However, if we choose to learn the lesson, I believe this can prove to be a great opportunity to retool the economy in the mid to long term, and bring back a lot of manufacturing of basic goods. We need to decouple our economy from China and bring basic manufacturing back. Steel. Pharmaceuticals. Clothing and textiles, automobiles, power generators. These can be good jobs that pay well, support a family, and serve as a solid foundation for a growing economy for many years to come. If we learn the lessson.

It’s apparent he’ll be forced to adopt the federalist approach.

But that sucks too.

ALL options really, really suck.

Oh boy, Another green party vote for Biden. Might as well head to DU and peruse the posts there. You may fit in far better with that crowd.

If you look at the study it allows for 25% leakage even under “shut-down” scenarios.

So, it is very complicated.

I am not even sure what “opening up the economy” means in the current environment, since so much weird stuff will be happening from now on this year.

Personal item: We had originally planned to visit relatives in KY in April. I had made the reservations months in advance. I didn’t bother to cancel because I wanted to see what the airline did first. So, today they finally canceled my non-stop flight and I canceled the reservation.

Then I canceled the rent a car, and the two different hotels, and of course the KY restaurants and stores just lost a bunch of money.

That can’t get restarted—and that was all a future event.

Trust me, I’ve thought about that.

One thing we bought on our last walmart run was a laundry drying rack. No lie.

I washed unmentionables and delicate sweaters in the bathtub when I was in college because I couldn’t afford the dry cleaners. I could do that again if I had to.

I’m washing dishes by hand right now as it is...it’s just a time sucker. Fortunately, for now, I have youtube stuff to listen to/watch. LOTS of lifetime movies on youtube. If only the dishwasher had quit in January :(

Your statement is very logical.
Herd immunity is the only way to fight this. Italy may be the safest country in a month or two.
This is what you get in a global economy.
We cannot shut ourselves down. Do we want to be vulnerable to China? They will do anything to get ahead of us economically.
Shutting ourselves away does nothing. Have the young and brave go back to work.
I hope we wean ourselves away from China.

“Turn that off for a year and the entire nation will die. Hell, the world itself may die.”

This is the conundrum and it is not avoidable, short of fast cure.

If you fight the disease at all costs, the world will go into a dark ages dominated by the most ruthless nations - the nations most willing to simply sacrifice their own people - left somewhat standing. China and Russia, in all likelihood. Those nations could easily overwhelm others that fighting the disease first and worrying about the viability of their nation second.

If you join those ruthless nations and turn your economy back on, you too, like them, may be creating a situation where you are sacrificing your citizens - and/or putting both the sick and Health Care Industry into impossible economic condition - in order to survive.

It is going to take a Solomon to find a way out that box.
