The editorial on page 4 includes a discussion of a subject near & dear to some of our Lost Causers -- tariffs.
The editorial is against them, wants to substitute some form of direct taxation instead.
In that context it has kind words for Mississippi Democrat Senator Davis who wants lower tariffs and strong words against Rhode Island Republican Senator Simmons who wants tariffs increased.
The editorial suggests that tariffs only benefit, "Pennsylvania iron-makers and coal-diggers", whereas freer trade would benefit everyone.
We might notice here that in 1860 overall about half of Americans were farmers and in some states that percentage was much higher.
"If the customs tariff in this country were abolished altogether, and the whole United States created a free port, it would become the great emporium for the goods of all nations.
All the manufacturers of foreign countries would come here to sell, and all the consumers to buy.
We are not exaggerating when we say that, in these days of steam and telegraphs, the great cities of this country would, in the event, become the great mart for the trade, not only of American and Asia, but of Europe also.
For, having no customs tariff to impede trade, and possessing within us the great raw materials of life and industry, it would be possible for us to undersell the world in all leading articles of commerce."
Some of our Lost Causers tell us that fear of just such a
"free port" was the "real reason" which drove Republicans in 1861 to invade & destroy the Confederacy, never mind that no Confederate leader ever proposed a zero tariff Confederacy.
But our globalist Democrats in 1860 and still today, with NAFTA, WTO & others such, promised great benefits from, in effect, a "free port".
That's why it's well worth remembering that Republicans came into existence as the party of those "Pennsylvania iron-makers and coal-diggers" and today we have a President who's trying his best to bring us back to our roots, regardless of their trade-Union leaders... ![]()
