A double masted sailboat has grounded off Waikiki on March 22.
The Coast Guard and other agencies worked on the best way to remove the 35-foot vessel.
There are no reports of pollution, but they say there are diesel, oil, and marine batteries on board.
According to the Coast Guard, the Steady Beat ran aground on Saturday afternoon, March 21, about 50 yards offshore of the Waikiki Reef Hotel after its anchor failed.
The two people on board were not injured.
A yawl is just a southern ketch.
I’ve inspected plenty of moorings where they had 1/2” chain at the top, and at the bottom it’s like coat hanger wire from rust.
I like the Bahama mooring system, with no ball. Just a clorox bottle with a # on it (call on VHF, somebody will be along to collect a few bucks) attached to a painter line. Pull up the painter to get a massive nylon mooring line with a big spliced eye on the end.
On the bottom, the nylon mooring line is shackled to a short but massive section of old ship / tug chain. I always dive them and always find them very strong.

Junior Brown is awesome, if you don’t know him. He was big-ish in the mid-late 90s along with The Derailers (also good) and The Reverend Horton Heat (rockabilly and a whole lot more).
Coconut Island is another fun Junior Brown tropical song.
Check out his (and their) material on youtube or spotify or pandora or (like me) buy their CDs.
Always put your boat in park when taking a nap.

Great little sailboat!
Nothing induces a little panic like coming up from a dive only to see a “dancing anchor” with the boat drifting away. “Hey, that looks a lot like my anchor!”
[Were they on a three-hour tour?]
Thank you. I was thinking about that.
If they can find coconuts, they should be able to make everything they need to survive.
From Mad Magazine many decades ago:
Nautical terms:
1) Astern - without humor - i.e., the captain told no jokes; he was astern captain.
2) Superstructure - a structure that’s a lot better than the one on your boat.
3) Quarterdeck - a cheap floor on a boat, which costs about 25 cents to install.
Those are the only ones I remember but that was about 50 years ago that I read it.
I know, right?
Certainly a small sailboat has never dragged anchor and beached itself, no one has ever had to deal with something like this before.
It is at least something to read other than all coronavirus, all the time.
I know. My father is a Kings Point grad and made quite a few sea voyages as a merchant marine deck officer. He developed and retained for life a sense of vigilance about his surroundings and any potential harms in the offing. The good times at sea he describes usually involve good weather and good company and friendship.
It doesn’t really matter but the nice thing is that you can feel the plastic nubs at night. You might mark every yard or meter? I always leave more rode than recommended (more than 7:1) and plenty of chain. Were I cruising all the time I might go all chain for a number of reasons.
They deal with DOH moments.
