Made in the 1960s for the California Highway Patrol, "Routine Stops" details some of the basic mistakes made by complacent patrolmen, that had fatal consequences. The film details the "suspicious attitude" that patrolmen must develop, as a basic means of protecting themselves against the actions of criminals. The police cars shown appear to be the Dodge Polara or Dodge 880. The narrator of the film was Guy Oates, who at one time served as the Chief of California State Police.

“Always be continually suspicious of everyone “

Sigh. That was their training 60 years ago. That is their training today.

“They used No 2 pencils to write tkts back then?”

I think they carried number 2 Magnum pencils.

I kept waiting for Broderick Crawford to drive up in his old Buick.

In 1992 I trained with the LAPD CRASH unit. They did all their reports in No. 2 pencil at that time. I was stunned. I was from a mid-sized, (300+) department, and we were computerized and required to use pen for any reports not done on word processor.

Gee, only nicely dressed white bad guys in the early 60s? No MS-13 illegal alien invaders, Crips/Bloods, Asian gangsters, or Ollie Snackbars? The good ol’ days...

I don’t know if Cops were on the production staff of the old Adam-12 series for accuracy sake, but what a hoot that show is. My Wife of all people has been recording the series for the last month. The procedures they followed on the show would results in about 100 Cops deaths a day nowadays. 97% of the Perps are white. The one African American I have seen after being pulled over and told he is getting a ticket responds “are you shucking me” Laughed my ass off its been so long since I have heard that.

If Jack Webb was involved with Adam-12, then they probably tried to make the show as accurate as possible.
