As of 12:49:48 PM E.T. Sun, March 22, 2020, the Johns Hopkins University Global Case Tracker states 27,004 Covid-19 cases US in the US, with 347 deaths (do the math).

As for 12:27 P.M. E.T. March 22, 2020, the New York Times Latest Map and Case Count reports 29,666 Covid-19 cases, with at least 376 deaths.

As of 11:58 AM ET, Sun March 22, 2020, CNN US reports 26,327 cases and 327 deaths.

As of 12:25 PM EDT 03/22/2020 Politico , using data from the COVID Tracking Project, reports 191,541 tests given, 24,345 positive Covid-19 cases, and 296 deaths

I wish everyone posting a number of cases or a number of deaths would divide that number by 331,000,000 (current approximate population of the U.S.) to put this into perspective. It would save a lot of time and some level of anxiety.

More “80 year oldsters” are dying with the seasonal flu than with Cov-19. Did we shut down the country for the seasonal flu???

It is not a question of protecting the vulnerable. It is a question of whether or not there are other ways besides destroying the economy in order to do it. The 2009-2010 H1N1 pandemic was just as serious in the U.S. as is Cov-19 now. The country was not shut down and the hospital system did not wind up on its knees.

The New York numbers are a little suspect. They had 3000 for a period yesterday then revised down to 1975 The overal rate remains at 0,6%

Comparing Covid 19 deaths to any already known quantities is a useless comparison. IF automobile deaths were sharply rising each day then we would do something about it. As it is the car crash deaths are being reported AFTER we've done everything we can to make cars safer.

Now IF you want to make a comparison AFTER we've done everything we can to combat the daily rising deaths and illnesses of COVID 19 then that would be appropriate.

As it is you're only making things worse by giving people the impression that this is nothing to worry about and we can all go about our every day business.

1,250 Americans per week have died from Influenza since Oct 31st. New York's population is 7% of the US. So proportionally 88 New Yorkers per week have died from the flu over the past 20 weeks, or 1,750 people. When 1,750 New Yorkers have died from Kung Flu, let me know.

But they do think that is where it is headed.

Believe me, I hope they’re not. They are the one place in the country right now on a really bad track though. Everywhere else is reporting reasonably good numbers so far.

The increase in reported infections that makes NY the epicenter corresponds to (yesterday's Politico stats, since they show #'s of tests given) the 45,437 tests given (presuming standardized testing), with an increase of +40,165 since last week, and showing 10,356 positives, out of a total pop. of 19,453,561.

My favorite is e, usually, lately though, can't say I'm happy with e. I know once I understood e numbers became magical, that euler was something else. I'm not mathematically inclined but at a young age I sensed the power of math and I have worked at it most everyday of my life. I still suck but for a room temperature IQ I've made it pretty far but man is it slow progress - as Barbie says Math is hard. However it is short cut to helping understand many things that are invisible/opaque to the unaided intellect.

Numbers don’t lie buuuuut.... only the very sick are getting tested. It’s interesting to see that only around a quarter of the people with flu like systems are even testing + for corona. But most people with corona do not get tested and thus don’t know. No one with a light case is getting tested (unless they are rich or famous). No one asymptomatic is getting tested (but we’ve seen from the close connections of patients that there are a large number of people who are carriers And test + but no symptoms).

So what stats to work with, when the “tested” group is not a careful group / over selected??

Number of positives don’t really bother me at this point. Number of deaths is what I am watching.

Again, other than the possible exception of New York, most of the rest of the country is reporting reasonably good to very good numbers.

Praying New York gets under control as well and none of the rest of the country joins them.

Flu season lasts about 120 days. Average annual fatalities in the US are 30,000. That is a rate of 250 per day. 6% of US population is in New York (20mm/320mm). 6% of US annual fatalities is 1,875. 1875/120 - the average daily fatalities from seasonal flu in NY State - is 16. There were 58 deaths from Covid19 in NY State yesterday. What do you think the fatalities will be tomorrow or next week?

Excellent analysis, I just did the same thing. 88 deaths per week from seasonal flu in New York State is about 13 per day, right? 58 people died from Covid19 in New York State YESTERDAY. Should we allow this trend to continue? We have to stop it.
