Star Spangled Banner, play it loud, play it proud

Posted on 03/20/2020 6:41:42 PM PDT by Professional

I got a big ole Bose speaker. Just took it out into the parking lot of my business and residence complex by my office and played it LOUD. Perhaps I'll do this nightly.

Great version...

Wow. Thank you. Song it a million times in my life...but somehow it rang so true just now. We ARE the land of the free. It is being challenged, but I believe we will prevail.

Very well done...I always like the original way it’s sung over the singers who add their own things to it...

Except for one......

This rendition gets me fired up and gives me goose bumps...I LOVE IT!!!!!!

I still got a few Yahama Powered cabinets 4115 that I bought in the 80s. Problem was rodents eating through speaker cones.

Thank you. Just turned that up loud on my Bose headphones.

You know, some people really don't like the National Anthem of our country. "It's an old drinking song" they say. "It is musically uninteresting" or other such characterization.

But, I love it. Not just as a national symbol or song, but as a stirring piece of music.

It's the bass. The tubas and trombones. They make this music.

When the bass opens up with the downward, heavy "Oh-o Say Can You See.." followed by the stately ascension of bass notes in the gap right before "What so proudly we hailed" my heart stirs in me.

Those themes are repeated again and again in different ways, and when the bass kicks in with the ascending notes at the "bombs bursting in air" it has a premonitory feel to it of the strength to come next. When they come to the end of the verse "Flag was still there" it is as if the emotion just cannot wait for that verse to finish and the strength arrives with both volume and the heavy notes of power before the last verse can even really stop.

Honestly, there is something about it, and I can well understand the power that music had in the minds of our servicemen over the years hearing that as they were coming home, the POW's hearing it when they were free, how many of our Olympic athletes felt hearing that, including the ones who didn't even win anything.

I know how I have always felt hearing it.

I have to admit-my favorite version is, and always has been, the version they play in the opening of the movie "Poltergeist".

Funny...I had just gotten out of the Navy recently had grown up as a military brat. When we went to the movie theater on the bases, they always played the National Anthem before the movie, and we had to stand up. When "Poltergeist" came out in the theaters, I went to see it. The movie starts with a pitch black screen with no letters or anything, and the Star Spangled Banner begins playing, so I rocket out of my seat and stand at attention. I am standing there in the dark, then the movie slowly becomes visible, and I realize I am the only one standing in this entire movie theater of people.

What was funny was...I was instantly puzzled and disoriented. "Why isn't anyone standing up?" Then after a split second I realized, they don't play the National Anthem before movies and civilians didn't stand in theaters for it even if it did. So I sat down, and the oddest thing happened...I was so uncomfortable sitting down when it was playing, that I partially rose and settled back in the seat once or twice...even though it was evident that the National Anthem was part of the movie.
