People in Gulf country consumed moonshine after rumors it eliminates coronavirus
The death toll from consumption of toxic alcohol in Iran rose by 65 on Thursday, bringing the total to 180 in nearly two weeks, local media reported.
The development comes amid rising coronavirus cases and deaths in the Gulf country.
So far more than 17,000 people have been infected by the virus that emerged in China last year, according to latest figures by John Hopkins University's Coronavirus Research Center.
It has killed some 1,135 people in Iran alone. Of these, at least 147 died in the last 24 hours, as per Iranian state TV.
There were rumors across the country that alcohol consumption would help combat COVID-19. Hence, people started consuming moonshine in large numbers.
As many as 427 people were poisoned as a result since March 6, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
Of the total, at least 14 are in intensive care, the news agency quoted Mohammad Javad Moradian, head of Fars province's Emergencies Center, as saying.
The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited for Muslim citizens in Iran.
Under Iranian law, those who produce, buy or sell alcoholic beverages can be sentenced to imprisonment and lashing.
Meanwhile, the worldwide tally of the virus is past 219,000 with the death toll crossing 8,800.
I also knew of Filipinos, who smuggled pork and spirits in Saudi Arabia. I wouldn't do that.
You beat me to it!! Great minds think alike.
I imagine so! If you ever watched any of the episodes of Moonshiners, some of these guys are skidish about LEOs and could make a cup of coffee nervous and they are here in Kentucky and Tennessee. That being said....probably wouldn’t want to try it over there.
Probably added some wood alcohol to give it a cheap kick. That’s poisonous.
I had been wanting to make my own moonshine.
Theres a lot of good info online. The first bit (poisonous)is called the heads. The last bit is not poisonous but tastes bad. It is called the tails.
Moonshining is made of 2 steps, the fermentation to create what is essentially beer and the second step to distill it into liquor.
Its a neat science experiment but step 2 is illegal in the US.
Another poster here, Deaf Smith, noted how the chemistry works:
“Methanol has a lower boiling point than enthanol.
The first pint/quart of distalltion is sacrificed to the fire.”
There it is. All mash has some methanol that’s concentrated in the first pint or quart of a run due to its lower boiling point; thus, that early amount must be returned to the fire.
Did not know that....I’m going to file that away in my brain. Just for information purposes of course...ha.
Looks like the Muslim moonshiners in Iran don’t know about this. They need to be reading this thread.
Obviously, your only concern is to be able to make high quality, safe hand sanitizer by cooking corn.
