“Spain and Iran also show huge jumps...”

Only in terms of absolute numbers. The rate of growth for the virus is going down in both countries, esp. Iran. The daily rate of growth of new cases is only around 6% for today and yesterday in Iran. Last week it was around 12%. In late February it was in the 50s. Iran has had between 1000 and 1200 new cases per day for about a week now. The numbers are no longer shooting upward like they used to be but plateauing. This is important because this is what happened in China and South Korea before their numbers of new cases started dropping in absolute terms too.

Spain has a long way to go, but their daily increase today was 13%, while yesterday it was 22% and the day before 25%, so even that country is moving in the right direction even if it doesn’t look like it. Trends are important.

China is claiming new cases are coming from Chinese returning from Europe.

You know, I could and probably plan to stay (voluntarily) locked down for a month. I’ve not left my house (other than 1 walk a day with my dog) since Sat. It’s not that big a deal. I have food for 2 months. If Italy only complies 60%, no wonder it’s not working. I hope to be the 30-40% who doesn’t get the virus this year.

Or you could look at Germany with 18,500 cases and only 58 deaths, or the US rate dropping like crazy at 1.3% (from 4% initially). Keep in mind this doesn’t count asssymptomatic cases, meaning the actual death rate is WAYYY lower than the confirmed death rate. This virus sucks if you are overweight/smoke and are over 75. For the rest of us, its more likely to be like a mild flu or cold.

But if that theory is true, Africa should have a ton of C19 cases. Chinese are swarming all over the continent. That’s the epicenter of Chinese colonization. Yet Africa has hardly any cases.

And what about Vancouver and Canada as a whole? Vancouver has become a Chinese colony.

Sams with our own Bay Area.

This is another theory that holds little water.

"What I still can’t figure out is how China managed to contain the virus to one city "

They didn't contain it to one city, they had cases in every province. But not only did they completely quarantine Wuhan, they shutdown every city for a month. They took it super seriously and it worked (at least for now). Italy didn't and we haven't, so expect the US trajectory to look closer to Italy's than China's.

They must be licking their fingers or picking their noses allot over there. They can’t be sweating on each other.

Is there any age & ethnicity breakdown in these numbers from Italy? I never see any!

How bad is this? According to Wikipedia 7452 people die each day in the US a country of 330Mil and Italy has 60Mil. 150,000 people die each day worldwide with two-thirds of those deaths (100,000) attributed to age-related causes.

I understand Hong Kong Fluey is bad, but the numbers I’m seeing remind me of how the unemployment numbers were manipulated under Obama.

Most countries have a fairly low death rate and they revised the chinese death rate to 1.3% today. Germany with 18k+ cases is at 0.28%. Austria is even lower than that. The formula is simple

1) Very old (>70) massively increases risk, especially 80+
2) Very overweight, especially if diabetes
3) High blood pressure

If you aren't in one of those three buckets, you barely need to worry. If you are in 2 or more you should isolate yourself as much as possible.

Maps I have seen show many Chinese cities with significant numbers.

What I still can’t figure out is how China managed to contain the virus to one city when the same conditions that affected Italy and the rest of the world (people leaving Wuhan for the Chinese New Year and scattering to visit relatives) were happening in China?

The things that come to mind:

1) when China did react, they treated it like an insurrection, and forcefully squashed it.
2) when China discovered it, it was spreading from a single locus. When Italy discovered it, it was already scattered.
3) China didn’t have locals doing protest hugs, and doesn’t have the same hugging/kissing greeting culture.
4) While China initially squashed word of the disease, they didn’t openly deny it even after it got rolling.

They don't show these breakdowns anywhere that I've seen. If they did, it would probably tamp down the MSM hysteria. And no, I'm not discounting the seriousness of the problem, I just think that we're being fearmongered to the point of panic.

Agree!

The unwillingness to not give out such basic information has to be more then fear of being called a racist.

Johns Hopkins has total cases 41,035 confirmed cases in Italy with 4,032 deaths.

I notice one FR member here, that is from Italian descent, who was calling this virus a "wuss" a few weeks ago. I see he is having second thoughts now.

Iran appears to stop reporting this or that statistic intermittently and for several days.

These numbers from world meter are helpful but often misleading. Different countries have differing reporting standards. Is there anyone here who actually believes there have been only 125 recoveries in the US? Many tested positive did their 14-15 days and are just fine, but haven’t had a post-quarantine test (test kits being in short supply)
