The coronavirus epidemic is slowing down in China, and will not pose a risk to the majority of people, an Israeli Nobel Prize laureate has said. Michael Levitt, an American-British-Israeli biophysicist who won the 2013 Nobel prize for chemistry for "the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems," has become something of a household name in China over the last few months. Although his specialty is not in epidemiology, he accurately forecast the slowing down of the spread of the virus in February, giving hope to those affected by the lockdown. But far from being a modern-day prophet, he explained in an interview with Calcalist that he simply crunched the numbers.

I had thought this as well.
I still hope it is true, but as more and more data comes in from other countries, it seems increasingly clear that China is lying about their numbers.
Maybe people in other countries are fatter, with higher blood sugars than folks in China and South Korea.

There’s no reason to doubt his sincerity. However, there’s every reason to doubt the accuracy of data from China.
When the situation in Italy starts to improve, that will be a meaningful indicator for the rest of the world.
As has always happened with every virus. These things follow immutable laws of nature and curves can be calculated.
Things have gotten so good in China its sent doctors to Italy and has airlifted supplies to Serbia.
