New York officials say the state’s coronavirus total has jumped to 1,700, with at least 19% hospitalized. They said the number of cases will continue to rise as the state receives more test results. New York has 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 ICU beds, far short of what state health officials are predicting will be needed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Put everyday sick people in military base hospitals so city hospitals can be used to treat the virus while NOT compromising military readiness...

Where are all the stories about all the people who are recovering just fine?

I’d say that the 19% is of CONFIRMED cases. So if you add those who are asymptomatic and undetected, the percent would be less.

I’m not saying that anything is an overreaction. I just hate when percentages are thrown out there when they have no idea at this point what their denominator should be.

When you are primarily testing those admitted your serious percentage is skewed.

YES! Thank you. If the only people we are testing are those sick enough to REPORT for testing (and the occasional NBA player) the percentage is going to be severely skewed. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a crisis. Only that these percentages are extremely suspect if not utterly incorrect.

They’re telling people with mild or no symptoms specifically NOT to test. How are they included in the 19%?

So 3.8% of those tested and found positive have ended up in ICU.

"Where are all the stories about all the people who are recovering just fine?"

How does that change the numbers already hospitalized, or the numbers that are going to need it in the future? Stop the denial.

It helps with the panic that is currently gutting our country.

There is no panic gutting our country. There are serious actions being taken to slow this pandemic down, and there is serious talk about it. It’s a real thing. Doubtless a few people panic, but that is not what this is about.

18% hospitalized?! Not good, running at 8% in some other countries.

How many of the 18% are hospitalized because it is necessary, and how many just because the hospitals can make huge amounts of money by renting out beds by the day?

It doesn’t. It DOES change the percentages being reported though.

First...You DO realize that NY already runs at 80% capacity in the (3,000 beds, TOTAL, for the state) ICU beds, BEFORE any coronavirus patients, right?

Second....NY is probably the closest state we have to a socialists dream. They are letting ANYONE in those available ICU beds, if they aren’t truly in need.

Agreed. The need for earlier testing will also become apparent. And by then, the mission of cooling down the hot spots might be rather difficult.

The public discussion didn’t cause the extent of slowdown in tomorrow’s economic activity. The censorship and deceit did.
