New York officials say the state’s coronavirus total has jumped to 1,700, with at least 19% hospitalized. They said the number of cases will continue to rise as the state receives more test results. New York has 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 ICU beds, far short of what state health officials are predicting will be needed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Test results do not cause the number of cases to rise.

During the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, tens of thousands were hospitalized at places like Fort Dix, auditorium, tents, warehouses, and other places.

IF it got really bad, depending on traditional hospitals to carry the load would exhaust the supply very quickly.

First wave of tests went to those with the worst symptoms.

As more testing gets done that number will come down.

So they didn’t know they had it and then they got tested. Kind of like the people in West Virginia didn’t know they were poor until they told were told they were poor and then they got on assistants and it ruined their lives. So we are to believe that none of these people would recover and didn’t really know that they were sick? I guess we’re all going to die unless they get a hospital bed is that right?

Our country is burning down the house to kill the termites.

Just what the rat doctors ordered. Wait..........when the smoke clears we will know what just happened and we will be furious. The damage has already been done and their prime objective has been reached

Here in Louisiana, I’m gonna dedicate the rest of my days, however many God gives me, to getting even with the bastards who ginned up this panic. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see the folks here in NOLA trying to cope.

Where are all the stories about all the people who are recovering just fine?

The 8 recovered in the U.S. at the moment are kind of dwarfed by the 107 dead.

Things should improved, but given the present outcome of the 115 resolved U.S. cases right now, the more reaction there is the better.

The worst part of this is that those who are showing up with symptoms now were infected anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks ago. Of those just now showing up, if their case closes in death, it will be 10 days from now. If they fully recover, it could be 20+ days from now (I don't have this figure off-hand.)

I haven't seen rate of infection for New York specifically, but they're currently the new hot spot. Nationally, an order of magnitude increase in cases every two weeks. That rate of increase far outstrips ramped up testing, these are not being discovered through testing -- they're coming in with symptoms and then tested positive.

This situation will quickly escalate.

If suppression was effective in the state, R will be knocked below 1 and the number of new cases will begin to dwindle effectively a few weeks beyond the date of successful R < 1, allowing hospitals to clear out the cases.

Quarantine measures will then be eased.

And then we'll probably go through the entire process again in a few months, with different patients. Hopefully, reinfection is not possible.

There is no other way to handle this situation. Alternative scenarios involve catastrophic casualties -- from 4.4+ million with zero effort to contain the virus (well beyond surge capacity), to 2.2+ million in an effort to "burn through the virus" (gaining herd immunity but beyond surge capacity), to this current throttle-via-quarantine method until a vaccine is developed -or- we've gained herd immunity and lost aprx 1.1 million.

This is the study that details why the UK shifted away from "burn through" to suppression. In summary, as the study says, firsthand experience with this virus demonstrated that previous estimates were too optimistic. I think that's an academic way of saying China lied.

New York State and New York City are not the same thing. Of course New York State’s numbers are going to be a lot bigger, with the big cluster in Westchester County, which borders NYC to the north.

Our recent Government, NOT Trump, has failed us.

And yet they continue to tell us that “they” can fix things. Sad part is most believe them. Pffft.

New York City has several of the largest areas in the USA where ethnic Chinese live. This probably explains the early rise in the numbers of infected. How many of them had people come there from China since December?

Could be but we really don’t know. San Fran presumably has more and wasn’t the early hot spot. It was a synagogue just outside the City, with some of the members, including the superspreader, working in the City, that led the early numbers for New York State and (other than in Washington state) nationwide.
