Following the wisdom of mothers in the days of my childhood would be far less costly and disruptive than what is being done today to contain the Wuhan Virus, and it might be more effective.
Back then, in the late 1950s, I remember my mother sending me to play with a neighbor kid who'd broken out with chickenpox. She wanted me to get infected so I would become immune. Sure enough, a few days later, I developed chickenpox and a short time later, I was immune for life. Large numbers of mothers doing the same thing helped limit the spread of the disease by developing "herd immunity," where infection rates dropped because the contagion was finding few non-resistant people to infect and transmit it. That helped control the spread of the disease before we had a vaccine.
That's quite a contrast with the draconian public restrictions being imposed by our nation's leaders and the economic upheaval being caused by our attempt to control the spread of the Wuhan Virus, also labeled COVID-19.
Our foundational problem in dealing with the Wuhan Virus is that we have placed too much faith in our medical experts to protect us, and discovering how powerless they are against it has left us feeling vulnerable and threatened. Complicating that, our leaders are relying on the advice of doctors who are using statistically questionable data.
The panic-buying and economic disruption we are already experiencing are highlighting our need for some sanity, so let's start by looking at how viruses operate. When it comes to fatalities, they are like lions hunting prey. Lions don't attack the strong animals that are fast enough to run away or large enough to fight back and possibly kill them.

“Herd immunity”?
What a stupid idea for this virus.
By contracting chickenpox you increased the chances for shingles later in life.
um... they did that because things like chickpox are fairly minor if you get them as a child, but deadly if you get them as an adult. So, it was not to stop the spread that they did that, it was to make sure they got it as a child.
That was a practice because the disease is far milder on children than adults, most people had immunity already because they had it as children, and therefore you were not causing a pandemic in a population with no immunity that includes an entire large demographic at high risk.
COVID 19 is a type of SARS - an upper respiratory illness of the type that occurred in 2002-2003. The life expectancy of SARS has been modeled and given reason precautions, should be over by the May 2020 time-frame.
Use common sense, have faith, and don’t panic.
It also helped that most adults already had chicken pox. Kids could get it and not kill off their grandparents. Not so with the new virus. Yes, eventually there will be here immunity for this one. But not until the herd is culled.
If you’re young, you may as well get it now and develop the immunity.
The same applies to those who are vulnerable... You are probably better off getting it now before they run out of ventilators and ICU beds.
After they run out of those, it’s a matter of waiting for somebody who’s on a ventilator to either die or get better. Then you’re at the mercy of somebody selecting you to be next in line and, we all know when that happens that the celebs and politicians will be selected before the rest of us.
As in NOVEL, new, unique, never been seen before in human history because some evil people ginned it up in a laboratory, refined and distilled from bat guts or whatever and then loosed it on the world, which has no natural defense against it. They benefit from it because it shuts down their own dissident movement and kills off some of their elderly and sick people, making a little room for some baby girls, maybe.

Corona is just a nasty flu bug. We have all gone insane. Mass hysteria. Destroying the economy for no reason whatsoever. Protect the old and sick and let it run its course through the rest of the population like the flu does every year. Stop listening to fossils like Fauci. The hype and predictions of mass death are preposterous. Open everything back up asap.

We might already be near herd immunity. The flu was especially bad this year. Common sense would make you think maybe you already had it.
It will be interesting when this is all over and we got hopefully some unbiased non-political research on who became infected and why...
Italy is getting hammered, is it because their healthcare system is terrible or maybe other factors like age, smokers, lack of vaccines, etc......

Another thing Italy has... Lots of immigrants. The smart people left Italy 2000 years ago.
The COVID 19 pathogen is a virus. A virus contains foreign antigens that when entering a mammal, the mammals immune system recognizes as foreign. Whether a given individual’s immune system has the ability to prevent that virus from colonizing the host and cause subsequent disease depends primarily on the genetics of that individual. Some have the capability to resist directed by their genes , others do not. Some populations have different genetic traits than others. Hence population genetics has always been critical in understanding pandemics. The fact that sub Sahara Africa and the Indian subcontinent to date has been largely spared has IMHO more to do with genetics than heat. In fact suspect that genetics is a more important factor for infection and subsequent serious illness than any other factor. However it does appear that those susceptible to infection who are aged or have serious underlying illness such as diabetes or chronic lung disease are more likely to become seriously ill and die.
The only real help for the affected populations will be the development of an effective vaccine.
Also Italy may be confusing seasonal flu with this thing in a lot of cases. More people have died from seasonal flu this year than from COVID 19.
Some doctors would disagree. There are a number of studies that indicate that shingles is on the increase, despite (or because of?) widespread use of the varicella vaccine...

Except that the ONLY way it stops is herd immunity.
