WVNS) — Dollar General Corporation announced plans to dedicate the first hour of each shopping day to seniors. Dollar General will also adjust its store hours beginning on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Dollar General is doing this in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. According the release, Dollar General wants to provide these at-risk customers with the ability to purchase items at the beginning of each day to avoid busier and more crowded shopping periods.

Other customers will be allowed to shop after this time period. In addition, all stores plan to close one hour earlier than their current closing time. This will allow employees to clean and re-stock.

“In keeping with our mission and our ongoing commitment to serve our communities, we are dedicating the first hour of each day to seniors. We appreciate our customers’ understanding of our decision and request they visit our stores later in the morning to allow at-risk populations the ability to purchase the items they need at affordable prices. During these unprecedented times, Dollar General is diligently working to meet the ongoing needs of our customers and communities. We are proud to live our mission and provide customers with everyday low prices on the household essentials that are used and replenished most often.”

I mostly worked the graveyard shift, so I’m more likely to be going to bed at 6am rather than getting up:)

That’s a fair point to the extent that it is well done.

Not sure how that helps, but as a business decision to garner public favor? A home run.

“I mostly worked the graveyard shift”

Likely better than the rotating shifts I worked a couple of summers as a yute.

Well I’m a Senior and both times I went during regular shopping hours there were sick people in the stores coughing without covering their mouths etc. I backed out of one aisle aisle when a guy was coughing a dry cough and he laughed saying people were doing that all day as he shopped.

If you can operate a rotary phone, you’re in.

Reminds me of the old saying — “they’d complain if their ice cream was too cold”!

Olus the shelves would have been refilled the night before so the shelves would be stocked.

I don’t think people are considering the amount of thought these groceries and others are putting into how tey can work to help people and accomodate others during this time.

I see a whole lot of complaining here on FR....WITHOUT THINKING. People are just so demanding these days.

James Woods, the actor, was asking followers on Twitter last evening for suggestions how to help people during this CV crisis. One person suggested exactly this to let seniors grocery shop first. Woods has been doing these good works for quite some time via his Twitter account and,I suspect, privately. Good on him!

Uh, yeah, that was my point. I'd been to two big chain grocers in the Grand Rapids area and had noticed certain aisles (paper goods for example) had been hit hard -- but I'd been in the local store here yesterday and had noticed nothing (even picked up a package of paper plates, normal size, because I was getting low at home) and the big chains visit had been the day before that.

And if you get caught with batteries just say you’re old and confused.

“By the time they really go up I may be going down! :)”

Yeah, it seems like it’s going to be quite the slog for a while.

Hip waders might be in order.

No one believes I’m a senior. I think it’s the lush, thick hair with no gray - the envy of most 35 year olds. It distracts from my wrinkles. ha ha

“People are just so demanding these days.”

I’m not demanding. I tend to go with the flow, and enjoy sleeping in most mornings.

Besides my Dollar-whatever stores are a bit away and I’ve only stopped in as I was passing by on the way to elsewhere.
