DALLAS - The city of Dallas will close all bars, restaurants, gyms and theaters within the city limits in an unprecedented effort to stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The restaurants will be allowed to operate delivery and take-out following an order from Mayor Eric Johnson, but cannot have their dining room open. The new rules go into effect at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday, meaning Monday is the final day any of those businesses can be open.

What a great time to be a business owner.

They should do this with every flu and stop the normal 20,000 or so American each year from dying.

What’s the problem with that? Worldwide, including China, only 7,100 have died from COVID.

I wonder if all City of Dallas gov offices will be closed?

What about Dallas Symphony Orchestra?

Dog parks?

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden?

Dallas Museum of Art?

Deep Ellum?

West End?

.

Just a thought....

Flu impacts about 10% of the population. About 98% are able to be taken care of at home. So, about 35 million infected. About 500,000 in hospital. 1/2 need intense care. Average ICU for them is 3-5 days.

CV impacts between 20-35% of a non exposed population. Remember—there is zero immunity in humans. About 20% require medical attention. Where does that happen? So, about 70,000,000 infected. Most mild. They go home. About 14,000,000 tested. Let’s assume 10% need ICU for 10-14 days average (that’s low.). That’s 1.4 million with a need for intense respiratory care.

So, for flu 250k people x 4 Days in ICU = 1,000,000 icu days. That is pretty much the system max.

For Covid it’s 1.4m x 12 Day ICU stay. That’s 16,800,000 ICU days.

There are 92,000 ICU rooms in the US. They are probably about 80% full today. That leaves 18,400 rooms available today. That will handle one day for 10% of those potentially impacte.

If we don’t smooth out the curve, we will run out of room in almost no time. And you don’t just build extra ICU rooms...unless you mean the “no treatment” rooms in China. I did not even begin to describe the equipment and skilled staff needed for high level respiratory care. If you are not careful, you end up with a room full of breathing vegetables. Sorry to be crass, but that is the truth.

See...this is not about dying. It’s about a lot of people getting sick enough to cause real issues for everyone else.

Don’t worry about dying from this. Worry about your aged mom getting a UTI that cannot be treated..and she goes septic. Worry about the car accident trauma that cannot get a respirator. Worry about going into respiratory arrest from a fire, but nope...no room at the inn.

If you don’t agree with those numbers let me know. You can move them anyway you want...but they are based on published numbers from here, Italy, and China.

So, those are your flu numbers.

A bit behind the curve.

The art museum closed the 14th until further notice; the Symphony cancelled everything through April 11. Looks like the Arboretum is open, but the Zoo is closed.

As for Deep Elum; Elm is a public street, but there won’t be much traffic there after the bars and restaurants are shut down at midnight tonight. Feel free to walk down the sidewalk. Same with the West End. I’ll check on the dog parks and get back to you, but I expect that they are open.

Kon-sty-two-shun?

That’s just code word for “racism”.

We don’t do Kon-sty-two-shun here.

I'd close down quadrants....we're making too many assumptions based on little data.

And I worry that folks that were getting mild cases....and that is the VAST majority will sacrifice any defense that their body produced.

Glad I live out in the sticks. Could have moved to the city for the culture but it appears it’s in a petri dish.

Sorry, no trust for numbers from red China and from the Chinese population in northern Italy. Chyna hit the outbreak for weeks, just like Chernobyl. There’s no way you can trust their numbers.

Plug in your own numbers. Use Italy.

The length of stay in the ICU hasn’t varied.

Any way you plug in the numbers there are not enough ICU functional beds in the country to help. And ICU beds in the middle of nowhere are not going to make up for beds needed in a “hot spot.”

Your reluctance to face any version of reality is kind of amusing.
