U.S. Offered ‘Large Sum’ to German Company for Access to Coronavirus Vaccine Research, German Officials Say
NY Times ^ | 3/16/20 | Katrin Bennhold and David E. Sanger

The United States says it will share any vaccine breakthroughs with the world, but German officials appeared rattled by its reported overture to a biotech firm.

BERLIN — The Trump administration attempted to persuade a German firm developing a possible vaccine for coronavirus to move its research work to the United States, German officials said, raising fears in Berlin that President Trump was trying to assure that any inoculation would be available first, and perhaps exclusively, in the United States.

Have never posted from NY Slimes til now.

Reason for posting - having a disagreement with a friend from the UK who says this story is all over Europe today and is making Europeans enraged against our President. Anybody have any other information on the story? THANKS in advance.

Are they more angry at Trump than they were yesterday?

First is fine by me. America First, baby!

Exclusive is unlikely, and unnecessary.

Remember, companies entertain buyout opportunities 24/7. Is it so wrong to ask?

Lol. Of all the pols in the world DJT is the least likely to keep a vaccine sequestered. However I can easily see Merkel or that loon in France doing it.

well then, europeans really are as dumb as we mock them as being. Why would trump hide the vaccine from the rest of the world even if for some reason he did get research to be moved here? It doesn’t make sense from his pov even if he was completely only selfinterested.

I agree.

But this story is totally THE story in Europe today.

Here is more from the article:

White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But two senior American officials said that some of the German news accounts first reporting the story were overblown, particularly with regard to any effort by the United States to secure exclusive access to a vaccine.

The Trump administration has spoken with more than 25 companies that say they can help with a vaccine, one of the American officials said, and is open to speaking with others. Any solution, he said, would be shared with the world.

Exactly - he wouldn’t hide it from the rest of the world.

I have made that point clearly with my UK friend and pointed her to news sources other than the NY Times (such as FR).

Even if the headline is true, it still sounds like the USA is asking to license the technology, not buy the process and keep it for the USA exclusively.

What a bunch of idiots ...

Let me tell you how all this works: you see, Team America is funded by the corporations, so they fight for the corporations... while they sit in their corporation buildings... and they’re all corporation-y... and they make lots of money!

It’s quite possible that US tax payers funded *all* of their research too.

Our politicians have had a habit of doing that since the end of WW2.

American tax payers fund *all* the research. American tax payers then pay a “jewelers markup” on the product (800%-1000%), the rest of the world pays only cost of actual pill/fluid production, bottling and distribution.

You seem WAAAYYY too stressed over what some stupid Europeans think about us. You want us to get upset that Trumps administration is trying to find a cure? Get out of here with this nonsense.

I am not UPSET at all.

I am having a disagreement with my UK friend and trying to persuade her that this story is simply fake news. Was hoping someone here could shed light on it.

We have at least 3 firms in the US who are working on a vaccine.

One is now testing the vaccine in Seattle at the Kaiser hospital.

Another one had its vaccine approved last week and will be starting human clinical trials soon.

I don’t know what the status is on the third company.

Apparently, with their prior SAR knowledge and super computers, the creation of a vaccine is fairly simple and fast now.

The time lag is getting approval from FDA for phase I human safety studies.

“But this story is totally THE story in Europe today.”

I thought THE story was Brussels trying to tell the rest of the EU that they shouldn’t use national boarders to try to contain this thing.

At least, that’s the “story” we get on this side of the pond.
