Dawn dish detergent dissolves fat/grease and probably works pretty good as a hand soap for this, but it will dry your hands out quickly.

“You can’t, even for a million dollars, get a drug for the coronavirus – but your grandmother’s bar of soap kills the virus. “

Eat a bar of soap. There will be someone out there that will read this and believe it.

I cannot find any hand sanitizer. I will carry a bottle of water and a small bar of soap with me.

OK, good to know but is there a common ingredient in soap that causes this breakdown of the virus? Soap is marketed as Goats Milk, Oatmeal and so on. I doubt those type ingredients make viruses coil in fear.

Soap (not detergent bars) is a salt made by combining an acid (the fatty acids found in fats and oils) with a base (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide for liquid soap.

You can make it at home with drain cleaner labeled 100% sodium hydroxide and olive oil.(this is true Castille soap) But lye is a corrosive and you must wear eye protection, nitrile or other chemical resistant gloves, closed toe shoes and protect your clothing.

There is a lot of information available on soap making. But please follow safety instructions including to always pour the lye into your liquid not the other way around.

This can’t be. Only alcohol wipes and liquid matter! /snark

We’ve had no soap, detergent, or bleach hoarding articles because there has been no such behavior and no such “monopoly” “hurting” us.

I had my training as a nurse in the 90’s. How I wish I had done my training in the 60’s or 70’s! Nurses trained back then, and earlier, had things like DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE!, drilled into them by no-nonsense instructors, who like old fashioned drill sergeants, brooked no laxity, and penalized offenders by giving them extra duties, etc., so students would remember the lesson. Yes, we were taught not to touch our faces, but I know it didn’t stick as well as it did to the old-time nurses. Fortunately, good hand washing stuck like glue to me.

This past Friday I had a CT scan at a large hospital in nearby Olympia, where you have to sign in at the radiology desk via touch screen computer. No human there, just the monitor and a big jug of hand sanitizer. Rather ironic, I muttered aloud. Spoke to three different people while waiting, all pro- Trump.
I washed my hands about five times during my visit, went home and ran thru the sheep dip then showered twice.

I always enjoy reading The Guardian paywall garbage notification. Surely makes me want to contribute to their worthy cause. /sarcasm

America faces an epic choice... ... in the coming year, and the results will define the country for a generation. These are perilous times. Over the last three years, much of what the Guardian holds dear has been threatened – democracy, civility, truth. This US administration is establishing new norms of behaviour. Anger and cruelty disfigure public discourse and lying is commonplace. Truth is being chased away. But with your help we can continue to put it center stage. Rampant disinformation, partisan news sources and social media's tsunami of fake news is no basis on which to inform the American public in 2020. The need for a robust, independent press has never been greater, and with your support we can continue to provide fact-based reporting that offers public scrutiny and oversight. You’ve read more than 7 articles in the last four months. Our journalism is free and open for all, but it's made possible thanks to the support we receive from readers like you across America in all 50 states. Our journalism relies on our readers’ generosity – your financial support has meant we can keep investigating, disentangling and interrogating. It has protected our independence, which has never been so critical. We are so grateful. We hope you will consider supporting us today. We need your support to keep delivering quality journalism that’s open and independent. Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable. Support the Guardian from as little as $1 - it only takes a minute. Thank you.

Wow! Very fair and balanced, The Guardian.

So why does soap work so well on the Sars-CoV-2, the coronavirus and indeed most viruses? The short story: because the virus is a self-assembled nanoparticle in which the weakest link is the lipid (fatty) bilayer. Soap dissolves the fat membrane and the virus falls apart like a house of cards and dies – or rather, we should say it becomes inactive as viruses aren’t really alive. The slightly longer story is that most viruses consist of three key building blocks: ribonucleic acid (RNA), proteins and lipids. A virus-infected cell makes lots of these building blocks, which then spontaneously self-assemble to form the virus. Critically, there are no strong covalent bonds holding these units together, which means you do not necessarily need harsh chemicals to split those units apart. When an infected cell dies, all these new

Thanks.
