Not sure I fit in here anymore ...

Posted on 03/16/2020 8:43:03 AM PDT by GulfMan

Before you look up my account and call me a noob I have been here since Clinton was President, just under a different user name. I haven't posted in a week or so, I've just been reading and lurking. It has really been an awakening recently to say the least.

I am surprised and maybe even a little shocked by my fellow Freepers. I really kind of thought we were all kind-of like minded (ya, I know, conservatives).

We have the "FluBro's" who are in total denial of what is happening world-wide. It reminds me of the other party and their inability to see and or face the truth and I am just so surprised by that. They are the exact kind of people Italy is warning us about in a new article today. In the fact, the entire nation of Italy scoffed and laughed it off, now they warning us not be like them. I think there are too many in this country like that however, I just spoke to a real estate person in Gulf Shores who said the place was booming, as grandparents/parents were taking their kids down for vacations since school was cancelled. Not a clue.

We have the folks supporting the guys from Tennessee who drove around the country and bought up all of the supplies that people would want to protect themselves from the virus only to list those products on Amazon at outrageous prices were completely justified in the name of free enterprise. Imagine being the type of person that sees a crisis and their plan is to exploit people for money during those times, and then to have other people support them?

We have those who say they will refuse to quarantine and won't be told what to do and want all kinds of places to remain open. It's like cantankerous old coots who are stuck in their ways and feel their freedom trumps everyone and everything around them, they owe their brother nothing. I'm embarrassed in part to be in the same boat as many on this forum. The constant arguing between those that know this is a serious situation and the FluBro's is tiresome.

That said, this is the best site for following the Coronavirus outbreak as people are local everywhere and sharing local news we wouldn't get anywhere else. I will continue to lurk for sure.

I hope everyone stays safe and pray this passes quickly, that as few as possible die, and the economy rebounds strongly, and we get back to living the American dream.

God Bless

Trump is responsible here, for protecting this nation, he let the plague inside and get out of control. The beginning of woes hasn’t even started, we are at the beginning of the beginning of misery about to come down on this great nation. He had the power to stop it and chose not to. It is his fault. - Gulfman

This thing would take down the economy whether we tried to stop it or not.

I saw that it was getting out of control in Japan and S.Korea three weeks from last Friday. On Monday the market caught up to me and the started falling.

The market fall would have happened whether the MSM said anything or not.

As soon as people started looking at why the market fell, they would have started doing the social distancing. Maybe not as severe as we are now that government officials are behind it. But once people started getting sick around them the social distancing would have occurred and occurred hard.

Talking about it and getting an action plan in place to slow the spread is going to end up reducing the fear. It’s going to allow the market to rebound faster. There will be more trust in what the government tells us than if they had just remained quiet and not addressed it.

Ultimately the course we are on is the best course for the market and the economy.

It’s a copycat world, once other countries started doing it, it was only a matter of time we’d be doing it.

Actually, I’m waiting for some ding-dong talking head to blame it on Global Warming, but I think they are all busy trying to figure out how to blame it on President Trump.

... to the best of my knowledge FR started in 1997, eight years after Ronald Reagan passed away.

Reagan left office after two terms in 1989 he died in 2004.
I've visited the Reagan library in Simi Valley, also a smaller museum in Santa Barbara (close by the train station) that is mostly about the history of his nearby ranch.

I enjoy reading the differences of opinion. If I have something to contribute, I put in my 2 cents. Otherwise, I just stay quiet and go about my business in my own way, without worrying about or trying to control what others believe,

Well the question is whether or not it makes sense to do it.

If we don’t do it, the hospitals will be overwhelmed. More people would die than if the hospitals aren’t overwhelmed. Public fear will be greater with the greater number of deaths. And that fear translates into less economic activity.

On the other hand, if we can show through massive testing that we know where the illness is and is not. That allows some people to be more brave about economic activity.

And if we can keep the death rate down to 1% instead of the 3% if the hospitals get overwhelmed, then that also makes people less fearful.

I think we put the air travel ban on China in first. They copied us.

Please take the weepin’ and a wailin’ folks with you. If nothing else, the woo-hoo virus will provide a periodic purge of annoying and less-than-useful freepers.

I was just telling the Missus at breakfast that I have seen more incivility on this board than I have seen in the toiler paper aisles in the stores.

But with the exclusion of older unstable immune centric people are succumbing.

I have no idea what "immune-centric" is supposed to mean. I'm guessing that you meant to write:

With the exception of older people with compromised immune systems, no one is succumbing.

Right?

Regards,

Yesterday, I found myself becoming frustrated while sifting through the Coronavirus threads. I was attempting to find a basis from which to post comments that might add something to the discussion. But I eventually realized that would not be possible for me due to my lack of knowledge on the subject; I finally realized that there was nothing I could add. My frustration ebbed when I realized how valuable it was to read so much info from so many sources- it was a learning experience. Just lurking here is valuable.

God Bless.
