Two emergency physicians in critical condition after becoming infected with COVID-19

Two emergency physicians, one in his 40s in Washington state and a 70-year-old New Jersey doctor are in critical condition after contracting COVID-19, according to a national physicians group.

In Patterson, N.J., the physician is in charge of emergency preparedness at his organization, which the American College of Emergency Physicians declined to name. The doctor was admitted to the hospital a few days ago with upper respiratory problems and remains in isolation in its intensive care unit, according to a press release from ACEP.

It is not known whether the Washington case is an example of occupational transmission or community-based spread of the virus. This ER physician complied at all times with appropriate personal protective equipment procedures, ACEP said.

"I am deeply saddened by this news, but not surprised," said ACEP President Dr. William Jaquis. "As emergency physicians, we know the risks of our calling. We answer the call to care for our most vulnerable, even at great personal risk. Knowing that, I urge each of you to meticulously follow the recommended precautions to protect yourself."

Last week, ACEP joined the Emergency Nurses Association in writing a letter to Congress asking for an increase in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and HHS. The hope was that funding would be used to improve hospital preparedness and development of medical treatments.

On Friday, President Donald Trump declared the virus outbreak a state of emergency, freeing up to $50 million in federal disaster relief funding and giving the HHS secretary with more authority to waive some Medicare, Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) requirements. Federal officials also advised hospitals to delay elective procedures to free up space and keep non-infected people from coming into contact with those potentially carrying the virus.

“upper respiratory problems”

Isn’t this virus in the chest and not upper respiratory? Maybe it is just the flu. Praying these virus can’t mutate to something worse.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

Note the parabolic shape of “Active Cases in the United States” graph. The “Total Coronavirus Deaths in the United States”” graph is starting to follow in its footsteps. If unchecked by measures to stop the spread that include mandatory quarantines (that may include minimum security prisoner furloughs and the requisition of prisons to house quarantined individuals in an easy to monitor environment) and regulations re large gatherings, we may soon see hundreds of deaths per day. Just like Italy.

Two points. One - overreaction costs are mainly economic while underreaction costs are in lives lost. No one is going to starve to death from any economic contraction. The Green Revolution a century ago means that 1% of the population produces enough food to make the other 99% obese, with enough surplus to export to godforsaken places like China.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Revolution

Two - this is an election year. The elderly tend to vote for Trump. Leaving aside the purely humanitarian aspects of mass death and illness, we don’t want the elderly shunted off to an early grave or ICU’s so that Democratic ballot harvesters can turn them into Biden voters. We need to put Trump back in office for another term. To do that, we must get this pandemic under control, and soon, to keep elderly voters healthy. And if that means losing a few points of GDP in the next few quarters, so be it. We’ll get them all back once Trump is in for a second term.

Well.....Yes.

Stories not written occur just like this every week from the regular old flu, its been around forever.

29 year old, I knew, died from complications of the flu.

That’s how we get to 22000 dead this year.

Wrong. Overreaction will cost lives in the form of destroyed businesses, finances obliterated, families destroyed, divorces, suicides, drug-abuse and the like.

What an embarrassment so many in this country are turning out to be. Like little girls. The greatest generation to the worst generation in two generations

South Korea was doing okay until they got to Patient #31.

ONE PERSON responsible for two major outbreaks there:

One guy in upstate NY was responsible for 140+ being infected.

Good plan and responsible. Overreaction would be to shutdown all of your healthy neighbors activities and lives.

Real mortality rates:

Btw, I’d only accept mortality rates outside Iran and China. Don’t believe a despotic regime to be honest about anything.

You can say that about any policy. The practical and political reality is that those deaths can’t easily be attributed to Trump. Inaction over the coronavirus means that any deaths due to the disease will be attributed to him just as surely as if he had injected the virus directly into their lungs. If we get hundreds of thousands of coronavirus deaths this year, the GOP is finished for a generation. Not just because Trump will lose the election, but because the political fallout from this failure will mark the GOP for decades to come. It will come off as stupid and incompetent.

“In the chest.”? That IS the respiratory system! The involves the lungs.

Upper means the upper lopes of the lungs.

Those Doctors get yearly vaccines from the flu.

There is no vaccine for this. Huge difference.

Italy did nothing.

China did nothing for quite awhile.

Look at their stats. Look at their yearly common flu stats.
Nothing like this. The speed of its spread is amazing.
