Please read the rest of the sentence. When you compare a full year of infections and deaths to a period at the beginning of Wuhan, the numbers are worse. The last time I compared the graphs, for the same number of days since the start, Wuhan has infected 5 times as many and killed 4 times as many as Swine Flu after the same amount of time.

The Swine flu only resulted in 12,000 deaths. The seasonal flu has killed 22,000.

Corona has only killed 6500 worldwide.

Yet, we're shutting the whole country down.

No, it isn't obvious to me why nor is it to a rational person.

You should send them to the UP with a two man crosscut saw to slay some more pulp wood logs....

No, it isn't obvious to me why nor is it to a rational person.

Coronavirus has only been around for 2.5 months and has killed 6500.

It's because of the case fatality rate, the rate of severe cases requiring hospitalization and ICU, and length of time it takes to recover.

If it's allowed to spread, it will overwhelm our hospitals. And then doctors will have to choose who gets treatment and who doesn't. That's already happened in China, Iran and Italy.

It spreads at least as easily as the flu, but there is no herd immunity to it, so it spreads very rapidly. And 15-20% of known cases require hospitalization.

If it infects a third of our population, that's 100 million cases. And that means 15 million hospitalizations. Way more than our capacity.

Looking at total deaths is misleading because this virus hasn't been around that long.

The political virus. The left is playing chess. They give zero fvcks about Americans or the country. This is all about getting Trump. ANYTHING the President does will be countered by the left and #NeverTrumps.

Meaning they do act at times as law enforcement officers, or they do not, but everyone else in the armed services can?

Wrong.
The Marines are subject to posse comitatus.
They are the active armed forces.
You must be a journalist or democrat or both to make such a stupid statement.

The Coast Guard and the National Guard in state status are not controlled by posse comitatus.

Me and my spelling - martial law - totally prevents everyone who is so much more intelligent than I am from ever understanding my point! How they are so easily distracted, confused by a single word that all the others words become meaningless and they are then compelled to enlighten me in front of the class for my grievous oversight and mistake...suppose I deserve an F! Forget the thought...man coming here to free republic once upon a time was a little more fun and a place expression of thought! In the world there is the PC crowd - it’s here now too! Politically correct vs Perfectly correct!

I do get peevish about the peeved, never liked the hall monitors anyway and I have also been pulled over for personal infractions by the grammarians. They have their standards to defend, the rest of us will just have to fall in line.

Best of luck

No, the virus has been known to exist for four months, since November 17th. It is very possible the virus reached this country long before the travel ban was implemented in February. In fact, according former Fox News reporter Adam Housley top ranking officials in both parties believe the virus has swept through parts of the country. We could be at the very end of the cycle.

It will almost certainly diminish by summer. There likely be a vaccine by fall.

There is NO chance 22,000 Americans die to to Corona. It's unlikely 12,000 will.

Corona is very little threat to any health person under 60.

In Italy, the average age of death of a Corona victim is 81. They have a much older population there.

The confirmed to case-to-death rate is a mere 0.8 in South Korea. And, as is always the case, there are far more actual cases than confirmed cases. Dr. Mehmet Oz estimates 80% of those that get the virus don't even know they had it.

Nothing justifies the draconian measures being taken that are harming the economy.

South Korea has tested over 200,000 people. There’s not 80% cases in SK that aren’t known.

And the 0.85% in S. Korea, doesn’t acknowedge that most cases are not recovered yet. If you were able track the existing cases, that 0.85% will go up over time. It represents a floor.

Currently it’s actually 75 deaths / 8236 cases = 0.91%. But there are another 59 cases that are currently in serious/critical condition = 0.72%. But also 7024 cases or 85% of the cases aren’t resolved yet.

It’s almost certain the case fatality rate in S.Korea will exceed 1% which makes it 10 times more lethan than the flu.

And if you accept the Nov 17th date, which I’m okay with, you still can’t compare 4 months of Coronavirus to 4 months of the flu. Coronavirus started with a single individual 4 months ago. And it’s had to spread geographically which doesn’t happen overnight. But it is now in 157 countries.

How many deaths we have in the US, depends on our response. The draconian actions we are taking that you claim are unjustified, might be able to contain the deaths at less than 22,000. We don’t know. We do know if it’s allows to spread as fast as it’s been spreading, that today we have 69 deaths, in 2 weeks we have have 700 deaths, in 4 weeks we will have 7000 deaths, in 6 weeks we will have 70,000 deaths.

One factor determining whether we have a 1% death rate or a 6% death rate is whether or not we avoid having our healthcare system overrun. If our doctors have to make the decisions we hear coming out of Italy, then older people will be denied care in favor of younger people. If they have to start choosing, the case fatality rate goes up.

That’s what the “draconian measures” are all about.

The Dutch have reported that half of their cases needing ICU are under 50. And we’ve heard that the average ICU stay is 18 days. Not sure if that’s true. But clearly there are not many fast recoveries from this virus.

The stats out of china do say it’s a small risk to people who are under 60. But we’ve got a 40 year old construction worker in Louisiana in critical condition. A 40 year old police officer in New Jersey in critical condition. A 40 year old marathon runner in critical condition. A 40 year old medical doctor in Seattle in critical condition. A 16 year old girl in critical condition.

There are also reports that of the 15% serious cases, 20% of them have reduced lung function after recovery.

This is still a threat to people under 60. The surgeon general called for ALL ages to social distance themselves. It may not be a high risk to 20 and 30 year olds, but they become spreaders and they will spread it to people who are higher risk.

Yep - the fear campaign to use fear to totally control the People is well underway...and we have a number on FR who are totally fine with it...

Kind of ironic - we know that the Deep State and others use fear as a way to steer and control the people - we had the commie/nuke war threat until the Berlin Wall came down then it wasn’t viable anymore and up pops Globull Warming, which has many in fear that we’re gonna destroy the Earth even as we do less harm than past generations and none of the data actually supports anything but the earth’s climate and Mother Nature do not now, and never did have a “balance” and even if they did, we have no idea of how to maintain one or ‘fix’ things...all our efforts end up causing more harm....the coronavirus scare is no different - the panic-induced knee-jerking will cause more harm than the virus.
Folks who would be up in arms if the government decided to tell them they could not move freely are now begging that same government to lock them, and everyone else, down....I’d wager if, after doing that, the story ‘evolved” they would also go meekly to barb-wire surrounded camps/tent cities because the “latest info” said that’s the only way to stop it.
Even though we know that they use fear to guide and control us, so many can’t see it through the red haze of insane panic....they not only welcome the government controls, they beg for them...

And the fear mongers will try to leverage it...

Reminds me of a saying, by Ben Franklin, that many FReepers, who are now acting insane, used to showcase:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
