California Governor Closes All Bars, Cuts Restaurant Capacities to Stop Coronavirus

In a press conference held on Sunday afternoon, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that all restaurants will have their occupancy levels cut in half and all bars will be closed to stop the coronavirus spread.

Newsom made the first announcement that all bars, night clubs, wineries and brew pubs are non-essential locations and will shut down. The Governor then stated that restaurants are a more “nuanced” issue and that the state doesn’t believe they require a total closure at this time. However, all restaurants’ occupancy levels will be cut in half, and patrons will be required to socially distance themselves in dining areas.

This message comes days after the governor banned all gatherings in California over 250 people. That being said, the governor did not address the closing of movie theaters in this announcement.

During the conference, Newsom said that 335 people have tested positive for coronavirus in California. The new tally of positive tests marks a 14 percent increase from yesterday. There have been six deaths from the virus in the state, with the sixth taking place in San Mateo county, where 32 cases have been recorded.

The announcement comes two days after President Trump declared a national state of emergency over the coronavirus pandemic and the U.S. travel ban was extended to include the U.K. and Ireland. The North American box office took a brutal hit this weekend after several theater chains limited their capacity to allow for social distancing. Overall, the box office hit a 22-year low point.

On Saturday, France also took precautions to limit the spread of coronavirus. The country closed all movie theaters, restaurants and non-essential stores. Places like pharmacies, grocery stores, gas stations, banks and newspaper stands still remain open.

Will restaurants be providing complementary tape measures so you can accurately measure your "social distance" from the next table?

Has CA defined what that minimum distance is yet? Does it apply only to strangers? Or are there different distances for different categories, like spouse, immediate family, extended family, close friend, friend with benefits, not-so-close friend, neighbor, acquaintance, I-think-kinda-know-him, stranger, stranger but required interaction (servers, hostesses, etc)? Has the CA EPA weighed in of the likely environmental impact yet?

So how are bars and other closed places expected to stay in business if they're forced closed for an unknown number of weeks? Or does everyone just expect mommy and daddy FedGov to come in and pay for everything?

Good catch!

I sure do miss news stands...

I used to spend a lot of time reading the magazines at our Rexall Drug Store magazine rack when I was a kid.

I'm thinking that these aren't going to be a COVID-19 hotspot.

Hard to read the product. Is that a Greek falafel mix?

What if the restaurant has a bar? What’s next is he going to set up a system like gas rationing under Mr. Peanut where only half of the states residents can shop at a time depending if their address is odd or even since not everyone has a car?

I’m getting toward the point where you are. I am getting really suspicious about the governmental power grab and, when this ebbs, how much easier it will be next time for fed state and local governments to boss people around at the drop of a hat.

We just got back from the grocery store, and it looked like the Soviet Union, except for all the corned beef (pretty much all there was in the meat dept.).

This is why you don’t vote for command and control liberals to any office, let alone a governorship.

Believe it or not, Mike DeWine’s Ohio order is more fascistic than Gavin Newsom’s! I’m not kidding.

STOP watching the news and start watching President Trump and his team. You guys are getting so worked up over MSM coverage that you've almost decided that this isn't a real thing going on here.

Hollyweird has more pull than the restaurant industry.

Would this include restaurants in hotels? Even at half capacity, I would think this would put tourists at a big disadvantage.
