Founded in 1988 at the Exploratorium, Pi (π) Day has become an international holiday, celebrated live and online all around the world. The numbers in the date (3/14) match the first three digits of the mathematical constant pi (π).
What is π, anyway? Divide any circles circumference by its diameter; the answer (whether for a pie plate or a planet) is always approximately 3.14, a number we represent with the Greek letter π. Keep calculating πs digits with more and more accuracyas mathematicians have been doing for 4,000 yearsand youll discover they go on literally forever, with no pattern.

My daughter’s wedding anniversary, 3.14.15... Yes, it was deliberate. They’re both kind of nerdish.

But! Greenwich standard time? Or Eastern DST?
This year, on the 03-14-2020? Meh.
Non-ironically, most people learn to use a rounded version of Pi.
The ancient Greek approximation was 22/7; the Chinese came up with 355/113 (3.1415929, accurate iow to six decimal places).
