Seeds, seeds everywhere.....what to do first.
Even though it is getting chilly again, everyone seems to be out GARDENING. It’s solitary, healthy, and takes one’s mind off all the coronamania.

my FIL refuses to eat blackberries for the same reason.
The wild ones were ‘free’ and made into cobbler for dessert during the summer. Extras were canned. It was the only fruit they could afford during the depression and then WWII.
He hates blackberries now LOL.
Craziness is more time at home (for folks with full time away from home jobs) - means this should be a booming thread... We are already planning on expanding our weeds/gardens... Gonna try corn again!

My litter of Treeing Walker Coon Hound from 2017. One puppy is off camera - total of SEVEN that season. Not sure how I survived that, LOL! We ended up keeping 2 males and 2 females from that litter and one male and one female are already winning hunts!

Unofficial goal this year is to feed my chickens mostly from my garden.

I did actually get started a little today. Totally unplanned. It was a pretty day out and I noticed some weed in the raised beds. Just a few, enough I could just pull them out. Then I went into the forest and gathered some sticks and stuck them in the ground in a U-shaped in one of the raise beds for my pea plants to grow on. I love doing things cheaply. And they look so cute when they grow
So sometime in the next few days in between rainstorms I’ll plant the peas, Romain, Black Simpson, cilantro, and arugula.
My chickens loved kale and watermelon and muskmelon above all...and any grasshoppers I tossed to them over the fence. ;)
I became BFFs with the guy that ran my local grocery store produce section. He gave me boxes and boxes of ‘not perfect’ veggies and fruits for the asking for my chickens.
I found some really short season winter squash at Jungs and Sandhill I’m going to try first. Then plant some longer season stuff from SESE. Also barley, millet and some dent corn.
Do you know anything about soybeans (cooked!) for the chix?
Yes! Gardening on my mind. Bought some veggie seeds today. Got gutsy. Or crazy.
I went to the store before work this morning. Brought home the milk and such because can’t stay in car all day while working. And when I came home in the dark I saw several bunny tails scattering as my car pulled in.
A hoard of bunny tails lit up from headlights in the dark. What a sight. And just Darn too.
Guess it will be me against them for my garden this year.
It is a pretty lettuce. I like how it is nice and soft like butter lettuce, but it is pretty hearty.
Sorry, I have never cooked soybeans for my chickens, though I’m sure they got some leftover chili with beans along the way. ;)

I’ve heard you have to cook the soybeans because the raw ones have bad things in them for chickens.
I need to call my friend the vet who has chickens and ask her :)
Chickens love cooked beans! They will go crazy for them.
Just make sure to balance it with lots and lots of greens. And maybe dilute the beans with whole cooked grains, or vegetable trimmings or something. Chickens can overdose on protein. Roosters are more vulnerable to that than hens, but it’s just something to keep in mind.
I know when I feed mine cooked beans, it’s the only time they’re quiet. Any other treat and they’d be talking to each other and bickering. But with beans they get so focused on filling their beaks, they don’t make a sound.

Did you soak them first or is that a human thing?
We are talking ‘dry’ beans, cooked, right? And not ‘green’ beans?
