Vanity: Medical Professionals who can't get COVID-19 Testing Done for Patients
VANITY

Posted on 03/12/2020 4:26:50 PM PDT by TigerClaws

VANITY post. Please add your own and I hope someone 'in charge' reads this.

A number of my doctor friends are telling me this:

1. Patient A goes to a primary care doctor with flu-like symptoms. Fever, cough, etc. and tests negative for the flu. They had just returned from international travel.

Tells staff to request a coronavirus test. Told "patient doesn't qualify" UNLESS he or she has been to one of the specified countries (Italy, China, Iran) or has been near a specific person that has tested positive.

2. Patient B. Back from a cruise. Flulike symptoms. Not to hot zone or didn't know if they'd been near someone with it. NO TEST.

3. Doctor described navigating the government maze of people to call to request the test as similar to calling the IRS. A nightmare. It's like the folks at the DMV were put in charge of this pandemic.

To be clear: these are ENTRENCHED do-nothing government workers who likely never had to actually lift a finger.

3. Insurance company. Full battery of tests run on the patient EXCEPT insurance won't cover COVID-19 testing because not in one of those counties and with someone verifiably suffering from the virus.

CONCLUSION: Lie to your doctor or they won't test you.

Rep. Katie Porter tweeted that the battery of tests they run costs $1,331 per patient. Is cost the issue?

North Korea is testing 200,000+ people so far. We are under 10,000.

Why?

Someone tell LABCORP and the New Hanover County Health Department.

Oh come on, doc, give them a hint. Just because I found that page doesn't mean they will.

What will change with the results of a test? You’ll still have the same symptoms. The treatment won’t change.

Testing does matter. If they don't know what you have, then how do they know what to give you to treat it? Different drugs work on different issues, and stuff like antibiotics is useless on a viral infections. Antiviral meds are useless on a bacterial infection.

Lots of different sicknesses have the same symptoms. Try going to WebMD's online doc thing, and enter the very generic fever, cough, and sore throat (pick any combo of symptoms you want). See how many different possibilities pop up.

Strange. One hospital near us is going to do drive up testing for anyone with flu symptoms.

North Korea is testing over a million people a day.

Your information must be out of date.

Or completely bullshit to begin with.

Lots of different sicknesses have the same symptoms.

Precisely. So why are people literally panicking about something as mild and commonplace as a flu-like illness?

Different drugs work on different issues, and stuff like antibiotics is useless on a viral infections.

If they draw your blood and find bacteria in it, they can prescribe the appropriate antibiotic. If you have a viral infection, they can treat the symptoms. If the symptoms are limited to a fever, cough, headache, and malaise, you can drink lots of water and get rest at home. If you have comorbidities and a weakened immune system and then you develop a systemic infection, you need to go to the hospital.

Actually, I posted that SOUTH KOREA had done over 200,000 tests.

Here’s my source:

Lucky you.

One guy got tested and received good news — he only had the flu.

But then the hospital sent him the bill. $3,200.

The local press contacted them and the hospital said they’d take $1,400.

What is this telling the average — paycheck to paycheck — American? DON’T GET TESTED.

It’s not hard if you’re a politician, famous actor, pro athlete, etc.

Common peon? Good luck.

Precisely. So why are people literally panicking about something as mild and commonplace as a flu-like illness?

Because it's not as mild and commonplace as the flu. The flu is much more widespread, but if we're not careful enough then the Wuhan virus can reach the same or more people. And it's definitely more deadly - even the lowest estimates using cherry-picked data and incorrect CFR math gives a fatality rate of 0.7% - when the flu is somewhere in the 0.1-0.2% range.

Correct. And it goes to your original point - if we didn't do any testing, the doc wouldn't know which of those was the correct answer.
