The Invisible Wall Proposal: Why The First Failed, Why It Will Fail Again, and What Works Instead

uring President George W. Bush’s term, a trial version of a “smart” border wall was built along the U.S. border by Raytheon. This idea resurfaced in the 2017 and 2018 discussions about putting in a smart border wall along the U.S. border instead of the classic, solid walls Trump supporters have called for.

I think it failed mainly because 2 months into office, Obama had it dismantled.

There were criticisms claiming it couldn’t distinguish between animals and people and was generating too many false alarms.

That didn’t call for dismantling, that called for refinement.

A camera that just watches people walk by is not smart. In fact it’s pretty dumb.

No, it was never going to be effective, it was never going to work. That was NOT its intent. It was meant to molify the voting masses in America (by sending a message that GWB and the Republicans were doing something) while NOT doing anything effective to stop the flow of illegal aliens.

Doesn’t matter if they won’t send people to investigate or arrest.

I think you are right. Bush never wanted anything to do with border security. Remember, “Family values don’t stop at the river’s edge?” He welcomed the flood of intruders. He never wanted a wall. So he threw a bone to his critics with this phoney smart wall gambit.

Exactly. Seeing people entering is useless without the means to delay or prevent border crossing. Illegal entrants need to be slowed down long enough so that border agents can respond & either apprehend or turn them away. No rational person thought this would work. It was a liberal proposal meant to confound Americans, and halt the process of securing the border, so that the illegal population could continue overwhelm America and drug cartels could profit & donate.

Reminds me of Bush’s deployment of the Guard to the border, where they were not allowed near the border.

Reminds me of when they passed a law calling for a secure border fence, along with the funding. It wasn’t built. They asked his chief of Homeland Security why not, and he said, because there was no money. Reminded that the funding was included in the bill, he said, yes, but the law didn’t require that we spend the money on the fence. We spent it elsewhere. Hence, no money available for the fence.

Bush did not want to secure the border.

And. Not, “Instead”.

Unless we have a whole lot more agents both generally and to stop a mass charge, and places to put people, and law/rule changes to just turn them back instead of processing them, there has to be a physical barrier.

The most effective “invisible wall” we could put up is mandatory everify. That will reduce the number of illegals and make it easier to catch remaining drug traffickers/terrorists.

I just saw a camera on Expedition Unknown that scans the sky 360 degrees, detects movement, tracks it, and identifies what it is - drone/helicopter, jet, etc.

you are correct, it just needed refinement

No, it was never going to be effective, it was never going to work. That was NOT its intent.

It did help the Border Patrol arrest a lot more illegal aliens which in turn lead to 'Catch and Release'. The objective of the wall is not to catch them its to keep them out in the first place and deter those who are thinking about making the trip.

We don't have the capacity, detention space or immigration court system to deal with thousands of apprehensions a day, day after, day after day.

The DoD (Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) ) and Raytheon built such a surveillance system in Jordan. It runs along the border with Iraq and Syria.

American Border Patrol owner has a ranch on the southern border. He experimented with drones and seismic sensors for detection which worked in all weather conditions. Obama ignored him, obviously.

Maybe what we need are drones carrying drug-laced nets to drop over colonizadors to render them incapacitated that responds to seismic sensor being tripped.

Remember that back as far as 5 years ago the BP agents on the ground didn’t even have personal GPS available to them to respond when longitude and latitude were given as coordinates.

__

This should be part of a Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement bill, missing since 1986 ONE TIME amnesty. The List of Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, missing since 1986 goes like this -

1) southern barrier;
2) require eVerify to hire;
3) end all chain migration;
4) birthright per Minor v. Happersett (plural parents);
5) end work visas;
6) 10-year moratorium on all new applications for citizenship (40 years to allow workplace automation effects on downsizing population);
7) Set up an illegal aliens’ victim restitution fund.

Enactment of these provisions will motivate illegal aliens to SELF-deport, and remove colonizadors from our welfare rolls.

Maybe, but it could have worked, if they wanted it to.

I like the physical wall better. Sends a very big message that there is a barrier here, and you have to come in legally.

Raytheon built that and one of Saudi Arabia’s border walls. Their leadership is treasonous for refusing to build one on the UNITED STATES border, citing ethical concerns.
