As America scrambled to understand the scope of an escalating public health crisis, the number of known coronavirus cases surpassed 1,000 on Tuesday, signaling that the virus was spreading widely in communities on both coasts and in the center of the country.
As of Wednesday evening, at least 1,190 people in 41 states and Washington, D.C., have tested positive for coronavirus, according to a New York Times database, and at least 37 patients with the virus have died.
The first known U.S. coronavirus case was announced on Jan. 21 in Washington State, but the pace of diagnosis has quickened significantly in recent weeks.
At the start of this month, 70 cases had been reported in this country, most of them tied to overseas travel. Since then, new cases have poured in, first by the dozens, then the hundreds.
A majority of the cases were in Washington State, California and New York, where everyday life swiftly began to change. Businesses closed. Colleges canceled class. Governors urged people to avoid crowds.
In Massachusetts, dozens of new cases were announced on Tuesday, and in South Dakota, the governor announced the states five first cases, including one man who died. The number of states with no reported cases stands at about a dozen, declining by the day.
The New York Times is engaged in a comprehensive effort to track details about every confirmed case in the United States, collecting information from federal, state and local officials around the clock. The numbers in this article are being updated several times a day based on the latest information our journalists are gathering from around the country.
The number of patients treated in the United States remains a small fraction of those with the virus overseas, where thousands of people have died

What ? Only 0.0003 % of the US population has been Coronated ? You wouldn’t know that from watching the news.
Yep, a fabricated panic. Prepare and relax, this is not the end of the world— as the dinosaur media would have us believe.
Not enough testing thats why its low. US government is horribly prepared. Major concern for government is COG. Hospitals will be overwhelmed by May. Wake up and read this. https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/10/simple-math-alarming-answers-covid-19/
US has more in prison than anywhere on planet but one of the lowest per capita hospital rates on planet. Hospitals and prisons will be death camps at this rate.
US one of the worst governments on planet. Worst legal system on planet.
CDC finally finds its own ass with both hands, a map and a cluebat: https://raconteurreport.blogspot.com/2020/03/welcome-to-party-pal.html
1. This is not the flu. CDC doesn’t issue warnings like this for the flu.
2. This isn’t going away with the spring or summer. Singapore and Oz have it, and the former is 200 miles off of the equator and always warm, and the latter is in its summer.
3. Anyone over 60 or with heart/lung/diabetes problems should self-quarantine (so says the CDC, finally). NO ONE does that for the flu because THIS ISN’T THE FLU.
4. Second order effects are going to be a real bitch: hospitals are going to be overwhelmed, leading to more sick docs and nurses, leading to really poor or (more likely) non-existent hospitalization for more and more people (including heart attacks, strokes, trauma cases, etc.).
5. Just wait until this thing gets into the homeless community (or, to be more accurate, until this thing explodes OUTSIDE OF the homeless community). These people will be in psych facilities, hospitals, local lock-ups, and in contact with police, docs, nurses, EMS people and many, many prisoners (some of whom will be out the next hour or day).
THIS IS NOT THE FLU!
“The first known U.S. coronavirus case was announced on Jan. 21 in Washington State, but the pace of diagnosis has quickened significantly in recent weeks.”
What does that mean! It’s gibberish. Nonsense.
Obviously vectors/carriers arrived here fairly recently to cause this recent mini-outbreak.
It has a 14-24 day incubation period.
It was been here for a while. Most would just shake it off. All the while shedding virus.
Interesting breakdown.
Also interesting how 665 is more than one thousand.
Check the above. 665 is unknown, not total.
Wow. Of a 360 million Population we couldnt even fill up a hockey arena. How many deaths, 40 or 50? Did the NYT have a database during Swine Flu? Dont think so.
The numbers in the U.S. are shockingly low compared to the seasonal flu. The country is ready to grind to a halt based on 30 deaths.
“37 patients with the virus have died”
If I may speak for other people here. Why don’t you move to another country?
Seem the places that the virus is thriving is in dim paradise cities, seattle, frisco, new york etc.
It was so refreshing to read your post.
Thanks for the rational comments.
