Chinese officials covered up the outbreak of the new coronavirus, costing the world some two months to respond, national security adviser Robert O’Brien said, in some of the strongest remarks against China in regards to the virus to date.
Asked about Chinese officials recently trying to claim that the virus did not start in the country, O’Brien said that just wasn’t true.
“It originated in Wuhan in Hubei Province in China. It originated some time ago. Unfortunately, rather than using best practices, this outbreak in Wuhan was covered up. There’s lots of open-source reporting from China, from Chinese nationals, that the doctors involved were either silenced or put in isolation or that sort of thing, so that word of this virus could not get out,” O’Brien said during a talk at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.
“It probably cost the world community two months to respond,” O’Brien said.
During that time period, scientists could have sequenced the virus. Teams from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization (WHO) could have been on the ground.
“I think we could have dramatically curtailed what happened in China and what’s now happening across the world,” O’Brien said.
The virus, which causes a disease called COVID-19, has spread to over 100 countries, infecting over 110,000 people and killing thousands.
China eventually let a WHO team in but only after weeks of negotiations. China never let a team of U.S. scientists into the country, though several were on the WHO team.
The joint WHO-China mission produced a report that largely praised actions taken by China and made little mention of indications that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) moved to silence critics and whistleblowers.

I remain a believer that this virus originated from a Chinese laboratory and it was accidentally released through some sort of negligence or theft of a lab animal. This virus was developmental and the Chinese had no idea how it would react in a “ real world” situation. That is why a country that historically has barely blinked an eye or shed a tear at killing its own people all of a sudden put their entire economy at risk trying to stop this in its tracks.
Luckily for the Chinese and the rest of us, once out in real world conditions, this strain is nowhere near as lethal as it probably was intended to be.
