Apparently the writer doesn’t know the Spock Live Long and Prosper sign is actually a Jewish blessing gesture.
I meant to say I was surprised by that, but in a way, they knew if you read it closely, because they mentioned, “priestly hand blessing.”
They didn’t tie it in very well, it’s an interesting bit of trivia on something culturally iconic. I think it’s mostly something that Trekker buffs would know.
I never knew that. Where does it come from, does it symbolize anything particular?
Never mind - I saw the link.
Spock was my favorite character in the original series, and this is a bit of trivia I missed.
Nimoy's father took him to an Orthodox sabbath when he was a boy, and that made an impression on him.
Check the link I posted above, should cover it pretty well.
It comes up at most temple open houses I go to around here.
At my synagogue, the adjustments were to wash hands more often, to encourage those who are sick and possibly contagious to stay home, to give to the needy, to pray and to study with more devotion. The Megilla reading on Purim had a record turnout.

Yep. And Nimoy did the role perfectly.
Spock and Capt Kirk were both Jews.
Well, the actors were anyway.
Seen every day at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, and in Sefardi synagogues almost everywhere. Only on holidays in most American Orthodox synagogues.
It might not be much practiced or known in Reform and Conservative Movement temples.
Ah, so it’s not an every-Sabbath blessing then.

he When I went to meetings on Monday at Paramount, it was the first time I saw LOTS of hand sanitizers at the table. I didnt even shake hands with ANYONE. If they get offended, F them. I’d rather offend than get sick.
Nimoy describe that visit, saying the eyes are supposed to be closed during that blessing, and he peeked, seeing the rabbi’s hands outstretched that way.
Supposedly, if you look close at its use in the original ST series, you can see that some actors used tape or something because they had such difficulty separating their fingers properly.
