Coronavirus is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu, Trump's task force immunologist says
the week ^ | 3/11/2020 | the week

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told lawmakers during a House Oversight Committee hearing Wednesday that COVID-19 — the disease caused by the novel coronavirus — is probably about 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

President Trump has often compared COVID-19 to the flu, which affects tens of thousands of Americans each year, in an effort to calm people down, but Fauci clearly wasn't trying to downplay the seriousness of the virus' spread. Fauci is a member of the White House's coronavirus task force.

At the same time, he did clarify that 10 times figure actually brings the new coronavirus' fatality rate lower than official estimates, which hover around 3 percent. The flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1 percent, so, when considering the likelihood that there are many asymptomatic or very mild cases that have gone undiagnosed, Fauci places the new coronavirus' lethality rate at somewhere around 1 percent. While that's a good deal lower than the current data suggests, it still would lead to significant numbers of fatalities, and makes the flu comparisons seem pretty questionable.

There are 20,000 deaths from normal ‘flu’ season.

This is 10 times more deadly, and 17 times more contagious.

20,000 x 10 x 17 = 3,400,000.

That’s a bunch of people.

“Cold and Flu season basically ends in April. Its reasonable to expect this to start winding down soon.”

It’s never even really wound up.

Fauci places the new coronavirus' lethality rate at somewhere around 1 percent.

Which will end all life as we know it, according to idiots.

“10 times ‘more lethal’ than the seasonal flu”

So it is 1.0% instead of 0.1% head for head. But the flu still kills way more because it is everywhere.

I am...still no fever....still feel like crap...and still staying in.

Meanwhile , a friend of mine went to a Casino where they allowed someone who was sick with a fever to deal blackjack.

So now she is staying away from her family until the dealer gets tested because it looks like the Casino is going to require employee to get a test.

So this puts it under 1%.

1% of the current US population (331,002,651) = 3,500,000

Or viewed another way, 10 x number who died from the flu (80,000) = 800,000.

CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in U.S., highest death toll in 40 years

https://www.statnews.com/2018/09/26/cdc-us-flu-deaths-winter/

Either way you look at it, it's going to be worse than the flu. Especially for older Americans.

technically speaking since we do not know how many people have got the infection but have recovered or how many people are getting a mild case that also is not reported leaves us with having to ASSUME what the actual infection rate and death rate actually is. With a LOT more cases going undetected and or reported the death rate is probably going to be a lot lower than we now know.

Takes lots of vitamin D

Legitimate question: what is this guy’s CV and political orientation??? The Left uses disagreements with their “educated experts” against us like bludgeoning tools if we disagree.

Paging Jonathan Swift. Perhaps we can round up everyone, force them to be tested. We can put them on trains, buses, ...or better yet, fund census takers to test everyone door to door, and if they don’t let us in, knock down the doors! It will be cheap compared to the cost of not testing everyone! $100B to test everyone is nothing compared to how important the data will be. Carry on!

it’s clear a bunch of people here on free republic do not understand epidemiology or medicine but feel free to opine none the less.

Our opinion is paid for by our donations.

Mr. j, looking down his nose on the FReepers that don't understand exponential, and doctor mom, looking down both her and j's nose because FReepers don't understand epidemiology or medicine are free to offer your opinions.

I'll bet either one {or both of you} $500 {to be paid to FR by loser} more Americans die from the flu than from the chinavirus this season {10/2019 until 9/2020.

It is clear to me that their are many arrogant FReepers that need to climb down from their high horses, your nose bleed is dripping on us peons.

Can’t wait to see what is written in 2024 about COVID-19.
This is from a 2013 article in NPR...

By the World Health Organization’s official tally, the flu pandemic of 2009-10 killed 18,449 people around the world. Those are deaths of people who had laboratory-confirmed cases of the so-called swine flu.

But the current study, commissioned by the WHO, helps explain why the agency struggled so much to calibrate its response to that pandemic and find the right tone for its public messaging. WHO leaders were first criticized for taking too long to declare a pandemic when spread of the disease clearly met its definition. Then critics charged the agency with hyping the situation under pressure from vaccine makers who wanted to recoup their investment.

The low number of laboratory-confirmed deaths — just 18,449 — added to the confusion, a team of global health researchers write Tuesday in the journal PLOS Medicine: “This modest number has caused many to wonder what all the excitement was about, and some to question whether the pandemic response was excessive.”

Good to hear that you’re not feverish at least, that just add to the misery.

Mrs. Del works at the local Casino, where employees are disposable.
I’d hate to see what would happen there if similar situations were to arise.

Prayers up for continued healing on your part!
