An analysis of the novel coronavirus spread inside the United States suggests that thousands of Americans are already infected, dimming the prospects for stomping out the outbreak in its earliest stages.
Researchers estimate that by March 1, the virus had already infected about 1,000 to 10,000 people who have not yet been accounted for. At the start of this month, about 80 U.S. cases had been confirmed and officials were still expressing confidence they could contain the new virus.
Quarantines, contact tracing and other public health measures have likely tamped down the COVID-19 outbreak here, the researchers said. But from the start, a group of infected travelers just big enough to fill an elevator likely has been expanding the virus reach, largely undetected.

“Researchers estimate that by March 1, the virus had already infected about 1,000 to 10,000 people who have not yet been accounted for.”
If I were a scientist, I’d be embarrassed to put out an estimate of “about 1,000 to 10,000”...especially when tied to a headline that reads “True number of U.S. coronavirus cases is far above official tally, scientists say”. That’s just misleadingly inexact dribble.
There you go again, making retirement markets fluctuate, casting bad luck on trips to Vegas and pleasure cruises and warning the worthless, unprepped, unwashed masses. It’s not the epidemic. It’s you people talking about it! STOP YOUR PANICKING, YOU, YOU [personal insults here]! Aaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!! ;D
[I don’t believe in luck and avoid mentioning the word except in irony and sarcasm. Good, informative excerpt, C19fan. Thanks!]
“...and warning the worthless, unprepped, unwashed masses.”
I’m not worthless nor am I unprepped.
And I took a bath just this Saturday.
Makes sense... How many people go running to the doctor every time that they get a snuffle or a cold? For every person who goes to the hospital or their doctor, there are likely 10 people do not. Those 10 people suffer from mild symptoms not worthy of being counted.
Over the weekend, there was an article/document posted, fairly briefly, purporting that the Wuhan virus has a better infection rate in areas with G5 coverage, amongst other factors.
Alas, it was pulled upon refresh...
Unless you need to trigger sick-leave....not much reason to get the test. Assume regular flu, and proceed on.
General numbers from Europe say that 85-percent people are having regular hard-flu (7-to-9 day type). Maybe a 102-temp for two or three days, and a cough at the extreme end. If you fit into the 15-percent group, you either have asthma, smoke heavy, have a secondary issue (bad heart, diabetes, etc), or are in frail condition to start with (older folks).
Home quarantine is best advice, and reserve the hospital space for the 15-percent group. Note too....kids don’t apparently get the bad case of it.
How about we just shut the whole world down, create “firewalls” by killing off great swaths of folks between populated areas, bulldoze them into ditches and shoot anyone who enters the no-go zones?
Snape: Obviously
I assume if you’ve been to an airport in the last two months, you’ve been exposed to it.
Greta approves this plan. LOL.
yep - and we have a few here that would approve too - one FReeper opined he liked North Korea’s approach of shooting offenders and burying them - i had to quip that he better not get it because he already stated how he wants to be handled.
Just stop
Of course people havent been tested. If you dont go to the doc because you figure its just the flu you recover and are never counted
Stoking hysteria is not useful
This is being played as a political virus/crisis that need not go to waste as big government, scum media, investors and the Trump haters are using it as a tool. I don’t minimize this virus but it still is being totally blown out of proportion and I suspect the left and big swamp would love for this to hit peak virus as the election truly ramps up. It is sickening.
When you don’t test, the numbers remain low until we end up like China and Italy.
That’s a good thing. Meaning, mild cases, lowering the death rate by recognizing the larger denominator.
THERE IS NO STOPPING THIS!
It will run it’s course. Do what you (individually) can do to protect yourself. The more at risk you are, the more vigilant you must be.
Remember THIS.... You should be MUCH MORE worried about Influenza (the flu) than the Corona Virus (COVID-19).
Although MOST people need not worry about that either.
GET REAL! Fight the HYPE. The TRUTH will set you free.
They should use “probability estimates” for official numbers. They would be FAR MORE ACCURATE.
The current “official” numbers are SKEWED. They are not worth reporting. They are inaccurate, outdated the second they are reported, can’t be trusted (agendas).
Why BOTHER? They are entirely USELESS except for hyping the fears of millions of people.
People (businesses, governments, etc.) pay A LOT OF MONEY for probability estimates. Companies risk BILLIONS based on them. We would be wise to use them in this case.
It has to be true.
Many, many people walking around with this who have mild to nonexistent symptoms.
I’m starting to suspect that I may have had it back in December.
I agree.
I was posting irony and sarcasm about a very few people who are panicking about the markets and taking it out on people who post about the disease. It was a dry joke...maybe a little too dry.
But there’s not much we can do about either. Some people get ready. Others get scared and try to get ready a little late. I doubt that whatever happens will change the outcome of the election ahead, as long as illness doesn’t take down too many of us older people before then. We all pretty much have our minds made up.
On the bright side, there’s plenty of business activity. The trucks are running. People are buying products. I filled the tank today with cheap gas.
