I think they decided almost everyone is going to get it sometime as it’s so contagious and the nation will be better off if the virus burns through with a minimum of containment. That’s the only logical conclusion.
That is my option 4—let it ride and wait for herd immunity...

Their aim is to slow the growth so the healthcare system isn’t overloaded, and treat the most vulnerable.
It’s possible they can succeed. Possible they won’t.

It’s interesting that China had that same choice, but when they saw the effects of it being uncontrolled, it was too much even for them - and so they moved to stop it.
So your ‘burn-out’ theory may well be right, but will is our government ready for the human-misery fallout - China wasn’t, and apparently that’s the case of every other country (except maybe Iran).

the WH has no fight or concerns since their families are safe so far.
The look last night was oh so what and we are
having to pretend we are concerned while tracking the Dow futures .
So , the plan is just let the infected from Europe and all over roll in and destroy our hospital system while play acting .
