I’m primarily a lurker, but judging from what I’ve been reading on this site the last few months as well as observing reaction among friends, family, etc. I’d say:

STEM people= tend to be risk averse
business people= tend to be speculative (i.e. no risk, no reward)

And I would say Trump is definitely a high risk / high stakes type of person. Unfortunately, he may be gambling with our lives.

I think that is one reason why there seems to be a polar opposite response to the Wuhan virus on FR. The STEM people (who fit the ‘classic’ non-political definition of conservative) are more likely to take this thing seriously and preparing as best as possible. The CAPITALIST/business people (gamblers, entrepreneurs, day traders, etc) are more likely to be the FLU BROS that are downplaying it because they LIVE for risk.

That was a high end projection. Worst case.

It’s always good to make it sound horrible—then come in under budget.

How could you possibly know that? We don’t even have 6 months of data on it yet.

Freezer, in my case, being the modest-sized compartment over the refrigerator part, that used to hold bags of ice. :-)

Only tracking confirmed cases and their doubling rate.

Yesterdayay was 702 cases
If the doubling every two days holds, like it has again today, then tomorrow we’ll be 1404 total cases.

I’m doing simple stuff here.

And if the doubling of cases sticks to this rate, we can get an idea what next week looks like.

Any further extrapolations and inferences are left to experts

I worked in the industry for over 20 years.

It isn’t just gossip.

It largely began about the same time the ‘toon sold nuke secrets for campaign cash. And who knows what else...

I have tears in my eyes at your offer.

But I don’t want her to stay in MA an longer than necessary. Neither do I want her to bother relatives there as they have their own issues right now.

I just want her to get on the plane in Hartford and leave all of not necessary behind!

But thank you again for your offer!

OOg.

I’m sorry to hear that.

There will be ripples from this for years and years if we don’t get a handle on it fast.

“They know exactly how it started.”

After 18 years no one is certain how SARS got started. SARS is also known as SARS-CoV.

Covid-19 is known as SARS-CoV-2. Because it’s closely related to SARS.

There’s no reason to think that China would somehow know exactly where Covid started when SARS is still something of a mystery.

But if Trump were to advocate an experimental vaccine that either didn’t work or had side effects worse than the virus they’d want him hung at dawn.

UK

Health minister and Conservative MP Nadine Dorries says she has been diagnosed with coronavirus.
Ms Dorries, the first MP to test positive, said she had taken all the advised precautions after finding out, and had been self-isolating at home.
It comes as a sixth person died from the virus in the UK, which has a total of 382 cases.
The latest person to die was a man in his early 80s who had underlying health conditions.

Have you bothered to look at the phylogeny tree of the cviruses to compare and contrast?

Just wondering.

Your metrics on cases is fine. It’s your linear projection that’s not.

In the next few days your numbers will rise so fast that your projections will have every person alive being infected. And then some.

The pace you are using is as if you took today’s stock market gain and applied those returns for the next thirty years.

Until there have been massive testing in the US, any projected growth rate using simple math will be flawed.

We went through this all in China. Until we recognized a solid pattern. That pattern was caused by the limiting factors of the testing kits.

Not saying not to keep tracking. Just be careful with the doom projections. There is enough of that already.

“It isn’t just gossip.”

You’re right. It’s libel.

A defamatory accusation without any evidence.
