As global markets continue to tank, with Wall Street trading halted after the Dow Jones Industrial Average dove more than 2000 points, and as at least 34 U.S. states and the District of Columbia reporting infections of the novel coronavirus President Donald Trump on Monday doubled down on downplaying the crisis, blaming the news media and the Democratic Party for hyping the outbreak and repeating the risk is still "low to the average American."
"The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant. Surgeon General, 'The risk is low to the average American,'" Trump tweeted Monday morning before the markets opened.
Later, about an hour after the markets plunged, Trump continued to engage in a confused narrative about the crisis, downplaying the situation and often putting him at odds with the messaging his own health experts are trying to get across.
"So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!," the president tweeted, appearing to attempt to calm fears as the global markets plummeted.
Less than ten minutes before Trump tweeted that "the economy will go on," and characterized the coronavirus as less dangerous than the common flu, Health and Human Secretary Alex Azar told Fox News: “Make no mistake, this is a very serious health problem. Nobody is trying to minimize that. It is a very serious public health threat to the people of the United States."

Stuff like this seems pretty lax, so it doesn’t give me much hope in getting a handle on it anytime soon. Although I guess I (or they?) don’t know if it is inside the facility and they want to not expose visitors, or they don’t want visitors exposing the patients.
They did test my wife’s temperature. She wore her own N95 mask inside. (She wouldn’t wear the googles I got her.)

Also, testing hasn’t started yet, at least in any amount. Today there were results for 11 people in Ohio (Ohio has approx 11 million people) - out of the 11 tested, 3 had the virus.
If more testing is done we’ll have a better idea what’s happening where and hopefully develop some kind of battle plan (belatedly).

That’s kinda been one of my pet theories about this (not seriously believed, but entertained nonetheless):
China, being a communist country faced with inevitable “demand exceeds supply”, needs to reduce its surplus population. Wars are messy, pogroms have really bad optics (at the scale they need), but a ~5% lethal disease would provide about the right fatality rate AND chaos covering more directed hits (a la welded-shut apartments et al). And the oligarchy really doesn’t care what happens to the rest of the world in the process.
Exactly. This is crazy...I actually cancelled a trip to NYC (where I grew u[ and have family) not because of the dread virus but because of fear of hysterical government overreaction. I was afraid they were going to impose a quarantine, shut down public transit, etc.
Most of us have little likelihood of getting the disease and certainly even less of being seriously impacted by it. But it seems to be the moment that the media and government has been dreaming of: the NYT had a piece that urged “the iron hand” for controlling it.
That is, Chinese-style, such as welding people into their buildings. That actually did more to spread it to the healthy, since they were trapped in a building with the ill, and is one of the reasons they had a higher spike after “quarantine.”
Trump is right. It’s not that much of a threat, we’re working on treatments and vaccines, and the true problem is hysteria among the powers that be.
Some of this may be motivated by politics, and some by fear of lawsuits. However, it’s doing no good to anyone.

Could be. Most importantly it should give in idea where pockets of infection might be, as opposed to the odd one-off cases.
