n Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York state currently has 142 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, making it the state with the most confirmed cases in the U.S.
The confirmed cases in New York shows a stark increase in cases from just a day prior, when there were a reported 105 confirmed cases of the virus. Previously, Washington state had been the area with the most cases -- according to the Washington state Department of Health, there are 136 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.
During his press conference on Monday, Cuomo identified New Rochelle, a city in Westchester County, New York, as a "significant hot spot." The city was the location of the first confirmed case of COVID-19, the illness caused by the strain of coronavirus, in the state.
"Westchester is our problem," Cuomo said. "That is a relatively small community in New Rochelle with 98 cases, more than the city of New York."
Cuomo also noted that he has been in talks with officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the increased outbreak in New York.
Cuomo also gave the numbers for confirmed cases in specific areas of New York. Westchester County saw 16 new cases, bringing the total number to 98, while New York City saw seven new cases, bringing the total number to 19. Nassau County has 17 confirmed cases, Rockland County has four, Saratoga County has two. Suffolk County and Ulster County each have one case.
Monday's press conference also included the announcement that Rick Cotton, executive director of Port Authority for New York and New Jersey, has tested positive for COVID-19.
"Rick Cotton, does have, has tested positive for the coronavirus," Cuomo said. "So, he is going to be in quarantine, he'll be working at home."

Why is Cuomo allowing this spread of the virus?
Welcome to the petri dish
Well, New York always tries hard to excel at something.
Just another normal day around here.
Then there is California. They need warning labels on everything, even like car batteries and hammers. Those people will apparently eat anything. So, comparing states might be useful after all.
Mrs. abb & I are planning a Niagra Falls/New York State/NYC trip the second half of May. Can’t wait to see the city.
Shut it down, of course. How hard is that to figure out?
Never let a good crisis go to waste
May is an excellent time of year to be in the city!
You will have fun. Bring money. You will need it.
Remember that Staten Island ferry is free and best way to see Statue of Liberty. Don’t buy tickets to any attractions (i.e. Empire State Building; Statue of Liberty tour) from anybody on the street - ever. Take cabs instead of the subway. It took me nearly a year to master the subway and I don’t recommend it for tourists. Stay away from chain restaurants - NYC has some of the best restaurants in the world and not all of them are expensive. Finally, Times Square is ground zero for tourist traps and scams. It’s worth a peek if you’ve never been there before but get out of there quick - so much else to see and do.
You sure love your virus.
RE: Shut down the airport. Block the roads. China does it.
We are NOT China. This is not Xi Jin Ping controlling the entire country.
Trump’s powers are limited.
RE: You sure love your virus.
Trying to inform folks means I love the virus?
How did you jump to that nonsensical conclusion?
Might as well not post anything related to it to show one hates the virus by your lights.
RE: Shut it down, of course. How hard is that to figure out?
You talk as if it were as easy as China shutting Wuhan down in one day. We are NOT China.
This is not Xi Jin Ping controlling an entire country.
Trump’s powers are limited.
Why do people scorn the media one day and then trust it the next? The media has proven itself to be untrustworthy, so how did the reset to normalcy occur?
And check out the Vertical Tour of St. John the Divine, absolutely incredible...they take you up into the nooks and crannies if the roof and attic, utterly fascinating!
And the Governors Island tour is pretty neat, as are the harbor tour and The Intrepid, which also has a sub and SR-71.
And if you like Gilded Age mansions the Frick Collection art museum is housed in one of the old Vanderbilt mansions.
I love NYC!
WA 100+
CA 100+

See a pattern forming?
Well,you know, a Billion here, a Billion there! It’s OUR money! ;)
Nothing in staten island yet?
It is still early in the US for the disease’s progression, but we can hope the ratios stay better than what has been reported in China and some other countries.
