A controlled burn occurring at Marine Corps Base Quantico Sunday afternoon near the Stafford and Fauquier county line is causing moderate to heavy smoke conditions in Prince William County and other areas of Northern Virginia, Maryland and D.C. The U.S. Forest Service is conducting the controlled burn of about 2,000 acres in the area.
Individuals with respiratory illnesses or medical conditions that are aggravated by smoke should remain indoors until smoke conditions clear, according to the Prince William County Police Department. The controlled burn is expected to last two days.
The controlled burn appears to have caught local jurisdictions off guard. Prior to the planned controlled burn, no public alerts were issued by the U.S. Forest Service or local authorities. Local police and fire departments are now playing catch-up by posting notices on social media after receiving calls from residents expressing concern.
Prince William County Fire and Rescue officials said they are in contact with Marine Corps Base Quantico officials about the fire. The police are asking residents not to call 911 to report smoke in the area unless the smoke or flames are coming from inside or near a structure.
The National Weather Service said Sunday afternoon that smoke from the controlled burn near the border of Prince William, Fauquier, and Stafford counties is showing up on its radar and satellite. "It looks like low level clouds in this picture, but it is actually a smoke plume," the National Weather Service said.
Fairfax and Arlington County officials also warned residents Sunday about smoke and hazy conditions in the area.
The D.C. Fire and EMS Department noted Sunday afternoon that the "smoke is being pushed as far as Northwest DC, and has resulted in several odor of smoke responses."
It was the Virginia legislature burning your freedoms.
Why? Why are they doing a controlled burn? Too much brush build up?
Not sure. Apparently they misjudged the wind pattern for today and that’s why the fire spread so far.
In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, on the trail of the lonesome pine!
This is a government-sanctioned operation.
If it were done on private land by a citizen conservationist, he or she would of course be imprisoned and make national headlines.
Just certain files and documents they don’t want reviewed.
The Forest Service calls it a “prescribed burn” now, not a “controlled burn,” because you can never be sure about keeping a fire under control.
Apparently they misjudged the wind pattern for today and thats why the fire spread so far.
The fire didn’t spread, the smoke did. The stuff they burned was probably wetter than they thought.
Yep. The Deep State was just doing a little spring cleaning
Remember the Dare County burn in NC in 2010 or 2011?
No, I don’t remember that one. Hopefully it wasn’t too bad.
Ah, that’s a better name for it.
Swamp grass. Went on for a year or more.
Not to worry about it, it’s just some Toxic Waste being burned kinda like Area 51 burning scraps of Stealth Chemicals in a trench and then covered up by a Dozer like nothing out of the ordinary.
Just move along, nothing to be concerned about.
