Continuation of the thread.
Yeah. Our postmistress is probably in her 60’s. Our mail lady is in her late 30’s. The UPS/FedEx guys are very very fit and probably in their mid/late 20’s or early 30’s. Our UPS guy was kind of chubby when he started but now he’s like the ‘after’ in a gym advertisement.

Probably similar to SPAM. It might not taste as good, but it is safe to eat and gives you the nutrients.
Although I did throw away a bunch of masks my old-man sent me in 1984(?) when Mt. Saint Helens blew. I tossed them around 2009 I'm guessing (bird flu). But, IIRC, the only thing bad was the foam on the nose bridge was deteriorated. The rubber bands will get loose over time with use. I got some UV resistant bands to replace the bands on my masks. The masks can be dried out, or zapped with UVC light or ozone to decontaminate them. The ozone however causes the regular bands to go bad.
Well, this is new information for me.
Thanks.
Good for him.
The little ‘overpriced’ mini marts probably have a small supply of stuff still in some places.
we know their bats are diseased, carrying several sars like strains, and that villagers who live near some of the bat caves have antibodies. We also know that the chicoms give tours of some of these caves, and that bats poo on the visitors. Guangdong and Yunnan provinces among others.
I did a whole write up on it with links about 2 weeks ago, maybe three if you want to mine my posts.
but here’s a quicky from NPR:

Sounds like the suggestion comes first, then the official ban.
Right now, NY is suggesting the millions living there not take the subway.

Great point to help watch upcoming trends. Slowly soften the public before enacting harsher measures. Interesting conditioning technique
medical workers and first responders right now, but general public later/ But maybe since your wife has been visited a nursing home, she might qualify now? Worth a phonecall to your doc, see if you can get a referral maybe?:

If they have an expiration date they have likely degraded to a point that they are no longer effective. This can be from bands, nose bridges, or even the material itself will degrade to a point they can no longer meet the NIOSH standards for safety and effectiveness. You may not be able to see the degradation on the mask itself.
“Particulate respirator The particulate respirator is the simplest, least expensive, and least protective of the respirator types available. These respirators only protect against particles. They do not protect against chemicals, gases, or vapors, and are intended only for low hazard levels. The commonly known N-95 filtering facepiece respirator is one type of particulate respirator, often used in hospital to protect against infectious agents. Particulate respirators are air-purifying respirators because they clean particles out of the air as you breathe. Even if you cant see the particles, there may be too many in the air for this respirator to provide adequate protection.”
Read this last line. And once you are in a situation where the particles overtake the mask the mask is what is call spent and needs to be replaced. This is likely what is happening in hospitals where nurses and doctors are getting sick with Covid-19. They are not changing out the mask regularly probably due to lack of supply.

There are seven general coronaviruses known to infect people. Common viruses include 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1. Three others of note: MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and our current pandemic SARS-CoV-2.
229E and OC43 are major causes of the common cold. There is no cross-immunity between these two strains, and it is likely that new strains are continually arising by mutation selection.
One site says the test only works for people that show symptoms, but there have been numerous articles on positive tests with people that don't show symptoms - but are linked to people that got sick by them.
There was a post from some official pamphlet that said “only people that are showing symptoms can spread the virus”!! It is really unbelievable the amount of miss-information out there.
The above statement is on par with the online advice that drinking rubbing alcohol will kill the virus. Although I guess in a sense that is true. I read where numerous Russians HAVE drank rubbing alcohol and killed themselves. (I'm guessing that the virus dies with them?)
I don’t think they’ve figured out when pre-symptom shedding starts but it’s pretty prolific during symptoms and a bit afterward, too. But most are saying that symptoms begin abt 5 days after exposure. So I guess there’d be shedding by then, right?!
You’d think Russians, of all people, would have enough sense to not drink rubbing alcohol. Something like 17 Iranians killed themselves doing that, too. Sad people are that uneducated.

Quarantine: With the shift from containment to mitigation, it is no longer necessary for someone who has been in contact with someone with COVID-19 to quarantine for 14 days. This applies to the general public, as well as health care workers and first responders.
Re: 1827 - I think the moral of the story is - don’t visit bat caves - unless you’re doing research and dimming the appropriate PPE.
Bats are reservoir species. There’s evidence that shows that flying increases their metabolism which increases their temperature, and which may protect bats from becoming symptomatic and mortalities from the viruses they carry.
It's also possible that they are bringing hand to mouth or nose inadvertently after adjusting or moving the mask up to eat, drink, etc.
As written before, unused masks (even expired), can serve a purpose to help deter people from bringing hands to mouth and nose. They also have the psychological effect of making other people aware of a mask wearer, which will probably result in people not wanting to be in close proximity to a mask wearer. But people need to be aware of the limitations and practice good hygiene regardless.
Maybe it was the Iranians that I read about.
I just got a five-gallon bucket of 100% alcohol to make hand sanitizer. Two weeks ago I looked at the stack of hand sanitizer at Costco and was tempted to buy some more. “Naw - I have plenty!”
Well, now that the stores are empty, and I gave some to my kids and elderly neighbors - crap! Nothing like the prospect of not being able to buy a $1 bottle (6 oz) at the Dollar Store to make you think the ten 32 oz. bottles you bought 6 weeks ago (on sale!) isn’t enough.
is the 100% alcohol you got ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.
Beware the 100% ethyl alcohol, it might be ‘dried out’ with chemicals you might not want to dunk your hand in, just sayin’.
The area must be very confident of their medical capabilities to handle any surge of potential COVID-19 cases.
I hope they quickly take the Chinese method. Suit up for 8 hours at a time. Use an adult diaper.
