MONDAY, Feb. 12, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- As a particularly nasty flu season rages across the United States, scientists have found a powerful new disinfectant that makes "light" work of the virus.
Researchers say a certain spectrum of ultraviolet light -- called far-UVC -- easily kills airborne flu viruses while posing no risk to people.
It could offer a new, inexpensive way to eliminate airborne flu viruses in indoor public spaces such as hospitals, doctors' offices, schools, airports and aircraft, said the team from Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.
The disinfecting success of initial experiments still need to be confirmed, said lead research David Brenner.

Science daily article from 2018 suggests it should be used more often to stop influenza, and that low dose UV lights work:

The findings suggest that use of overhead far-UVC light in hospitals, doctors' offices, schools, airports, airplanes, and other public spaces could provide a powerful check on seasonal influenza epidemics, as well as influenza pandemics.
This is well known. It has been for along time. To pass this off as something new is a fraud. And there are people out their on the prep forums who have been buying UV units for this virus. I image they are very hard to get at this point.
New? They have known that for a 100 years.
there are problems using UV light: sunburn and cataracts for those exposed, and the studies on Wuhan flu have not been done, and so the dosage to clean surfaces or the indoor atmosphere has to be done (some technical articles out there on this)
but I am old enough to remember whe we used it a lot in hospitals to keep germs from spreading, and then it fell out of favor. However, it’s use in hospitals is starting again, and of course, your mosquito zapper uses UV light to help kill those critters.
Just don’t put yourself under UV light. It causes cancer.
Ozone has also been used, if I remember correctly.
my point exactly. We used it in hospitals back in the 1960s, mainly above the door in nurseries to keep the air clean, and also in TB hospitals. And our local hospital here in the Philippines has the lights in corridors because TB is a problem.
in the USA they are starting to use it to stop the spread of C dif and antibiotic resistant staph.
The reason I posted a few articles is that with all the wuhan flu hysteria, no one seems to be discussing this old fashioned method of stopping spread.
It’s got to be “UV-C”, however, and not just regular UV.
Ozone gas, nothing can beat that for disinfecting. When certain areas throw up their hands (like Milwaukee for instance) when they can’t rid their water of critters enough to drink safely with chemicals, they turned to ozone. Problem solved.

Normal UV-blocking sunglasses work?
I wondered about this myself last week, and searched on the internet. There are scientific studies that UV is effective against coronaviruses, although the specific virus tested in the article is not this new one. It takes about an hour to deactivate most of the virus on a surface. So it will work, but it is kind of difficult to use since it damages our eyes, and so it has to be used in areas or at times where humans are not around.
