I won't name the source, but Fort Worth ISD has suffered a serious data breach, and the main computer system could be down until after spring break. Got kids or a spouse in Fort Worth ISD? Watch your bank accounts or personal files.
ISD ?
Independent School District
Hey, moving there next Monday, my new hometown in the news.
“Fort Worth ISD said no student, teacher or staff members personal information was stolen.” (from Fox article)
I was unaware that it made the news. However, some employees are already reporting hacked checking accounts. It’s a serious enough breach that the big guns are working on it, even though the district is trying to downplay it.
My experience over many decades is that IT folks may administer a system but know next to nothing about how and why it works and how to protect it
There are rare exceptions
Very rare
And when it comes to security breaches, slim to none
I can verify this data breech happened, from a source on the scene.
The Independent School District computer systems are still shut down, and will be for a couple of weeks.
Exactly. I retired from the industry in 2000. Back then, system security was a high priority on your "things you better know" list as an IT supervisor. These days, all they know how to do is shut everything down and make a call to Microsoft, Cisco, etc. This of course, leads to days of tracing before they actually find out what was stolen.
Bastards. My old bank had a data breach about ten years ago. The local cybercrimes unit said it was a team of hackers out of Mexico stealing financial data and using it to buy Microsoft online game IDs that they’d roll over and sell to Third World gamers at a discount. Microsoft invalidated the game IDs for the authorities, and everyone who got hit had to get an FDIC refund to their accounts after the bank fixed their firewall and they issued new bank cards to everyone who got hit. We spent two weeks doing things the old fashioned way: writing checks and balancing the checkbook so we didn’t kite some paper. Let’s see your average Generation Zero slacker do that. They’d probably fold the check and try to stick in the card slot. LOL
So there’s a silver lining :)
Does this include the school tax records?
My youngest graduated from Paschal in ‘93.
I don't know what was exposed, and regardless of what they claim, I'll bet the district doesn't know yet either.
its what happens when you run on microsoft. Virus and Hack city
Do yourself a favor and head on over to Kincaid’s for a burger, they’re tasty.
Imperial Star Destroyer
I gave the schools fake SS numbers for my kids - it’s none of their damn business.
I oversaw a large HP/UX (unix) network for a couple of years. Same problems.
