The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) from Wuhan is currently causing concern in the medical community as the virus is spreading around the world.1 Since identification of the virus in late December 2019, the number of cases from China that have been imported into other countries is on the rise, and the epidemiologic picture is changing on a daily basis. We are reporting a case of 2019-nCoV infection acquired outside Asia in which transmission appears to have occurred during the incubation period in the index patient.
A 33-year-old otherwise healthy German businessman (Patient 1) became ill with a sore throat, chills, and myalgias on January 24, 2020. The following day, a fever of 39.1°C (102.4°F) developed, along with a productive cough. By the evening of the next day, he started feeling better and went back to work on January 27.
Before the onset of symptoms, he had attended meetings with a Chinese business partner at his company near Munich on January 20 and 21. The business partner, a Shanghai resident, had visited Germany between January 19 and 22. During her stay, she had been well with no signs or symptoms of infection but had become ill on her flight back to China, where she tested positive for 2019-nCoV on January 26 (index patient in Figure 1) (see Supplementary Appendix, available at NEJM.org, for details on the timeline of symptom development leading to hospitalization).

Seems a bit aggressive given the assurances from many on this forum that the flu is much worse. If we don’t take those measures to stop the flu, why do it to stop coronavirus?
It’s much worse than the flu with a mortality rate of 3-10 % depending on your dna makeup. Also, jet travel from hotspots will infect us faster. You don’t see cities being quarantined due to flu.
CV is much worse than the Flu. The Flu has a vaccine and a small (0.2%) fatality rate. CV has no vaccine and a 10X higher fatality rate.
Wuhan and some Chinese cities were on some type of quarantine. There were a couple of Italian villages (smaller towns of maybe a couple thousand residents). It’s been openly discussed by German politicians, but realistically....they couldn’t achieve this type of action in Stuttgart, or Berlin (way too big). There’s also no real evidence that shutting down a city has any key advantage.
Adding to the German perception....if you think you might have it....you have to call and they reference you to a Q-and-A session over the phone. If you fit the profile, then they tell you a central location to drive to, and a nurse will come out to do a swab for the test. No entry into any hospital or clinic. Four hours later, they know your situation. You’d have to be really bad-off condition to get the ‘ticket’ to enter a medical facility.
In the first ‘wave’ in Italy (say first ten days it was hyped up)....it was mostly Italians over the age of 65. Current death tally (4 March) is 80 dead Italians.
Can’t say the Iranian slant on this. Medical services may not be first world, or it could be lack of attention by medical staff after you get dumped into a hospital.

Also, the coronavirus now spreading around the world is somewhat different than the original virus. As such, it appears the mortality rate with the second virus is a bit lower.Bring Out Your Dead*shrug* If you trust the Chinese statistics, the mortality rate in China is 5.6%
Applying the same formula used to get that 5.6% Chinese rate gives a 12.2% rate for everywhere but China.
I don't fully trust anyone's numbers, but I do trust their actions, and their actions show that the various governments are spooked....

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

CV has done serious long lasting damage to lungs for some victims, which is different from flu and pneumonia.
Yeah right LOL...may be I should visit a Chinese restaurant today! The Ichiban Chinese buffet here I like a lot but there are many workers there who do not speak any English, so should I worry?
Remember, Italians greet each other with a lot of physical contact and there is a large number of elderly Italians, too. As such, SARS-CoV-2 transmitted very quickly among the Italian population and also resulted in a fairly high mortality rate, skewed by older people getting infected.
Well they have all that spectacular ‘’free health care’’ over there in Germany, the kind the Left is always raving about in this country so there shouldn’t be any problems.

Back at the beginning of this all, there was a screen shot of some chat room conversation by “Secret Agent Man” or something. He talked about this - where it was made as a weapon and has two phases. The initial infection is not too bad so one recovers and goes back out into public to spread it. And then the deadly one kicks in. The “hot toddy” British guy described this same thing.
Or - maybe that is just how a lot of “normal” viruses work, and the chat person knew that, and was full of crap about it being a bio-weapon.
Mute point I guess - seeing as it is acting as a weapon.
Adaptation in the natural world is an amazing thing. Wonderful when it comes to thinking about how some animals can change their color in winter to blend in.
Terrifying when one thinks of some diseases that have adapted so well.
