"What a Fool Believes" is a song written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. The best-known version was recorded by The Doobie Brothers (with McDonald singing lead vocals) for their 1978 album Minute by Minute. Debuting at number 73 on January 20, 1979, the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 14, 1979 for one week. The song received Grammy Awards in 1980 for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

The song was one of the few non-disco No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 during the first eight months of 1979. The lyrics tell a story of a man who is reunited with an old love interest and attempts to rekindle a romantic relationship with her before discovering that one never really existed.

I saw them at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto in 1980. Good show.

The Doobies lost me before the Minute By Minute album was released. The first album with McDonald, Takin' It To The Streets, was better than anything that would follow.

I saw the Doobie Brothers live at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in 1976 or 1975. The Marshall Tucker band and Little Feat played at the same concert. Great music in the hills above Santa Barbara with an ocean view. It was GREAT. I hear the 70’s and 80’s music being streamed via internet all the time. Young people today like it.

Michael McDonald has the wierdest voice, but it is definitely distinctive. Probably best heard on the Steely Dan recordings.

I don't sing, but I'm pretty much a tenor. I've tried to contort my voice to approximate his, and I just can't do it.

Dang. I didn’t even read your post before I posted mine.

Great minds. And we’re both right.

Nope. But if you want to see some good stuff, find the YouTube live version of Loggins and Jim Messina playing “Angry Eyes”. Messina knew the kid had talent but wouldn’t make it on his own as a solo act, which is what he wanted. What started as a producer and mentor role led to the duo which had a lot of success.

It’s very accurate to say that Jim Messina made it possible for Kenny Loggins to have a solo career.

Fixed it.

Why wouldn’t he make it on his own? Even Kenny’s brother had one top 5 hit.

Cannot think of one Doobie Brothers tune that I dislike. Could listen to every album all the through and enjoy it. Same goes for Chicago and Steely Dan, the latter of which is a cut or two above.

"Michael McDonald killed the Doobies IMHO."

I've always said the same. McDonald's voice is good in other genres, but not for a driving rock band, which is what the original Doobies were.

A few of their early songs were okay, but never was a big fan. Didn’t like McDonald very much.

My bro would throw up a huge salute, though. He was a DB fan, could pick out “China Grove” on a guitar, enjoyed the band’s shows and all things doobie. And I do mean ‘all things doobie’, heh.
