Couldn't the police just put the welfare check in the mail?

I remember when police officers used to just wait people like out, and denied drama they tended to just give up or rethink things after a couple of days. Sometimes they overdosed or shot themselves, but usually they changed their mind as several days went buy.

I think that the old way (while not perfect) was much better.

Can’t fault the cops.. they withdrew and warned her to drop the weapon. Unfortunately for her, she drew it instead of dropping it.

I know they were doing their jobs, I know she ultimately pointed a gun at them. But if you watch the video, this is a tragedy. She didn’t act aggressively until the end. She’s disoriented, and suddenly a group of people are in your house telling you that they are taking you away. Really sad.

The cops aren’t at fault, but probably never should have been there.

Or if you’re going to seize someone because they’re out of it, do it quickly. Don’t wait all day until this sweet little woman finally has a gun and you have to gun her down.

If this was on the street I might view it differently, but this is inside her house and they were there on a “welfare” check, not to investigate criminal activity.

Having worked in a big city ER for years I know a bit about "civil commitment" laws.Every state has them.Among other things they allow a police officer, physician and other health care professionals to determine "on the fly" (my words) that a particular person is a potential danger to himself/herself and, having made that determination,it is then allowed for that person to be taken to a health care facility against his/her will.

In Massachusetts it's referred to as being "pink papered" because the state form that's filled out chronicling, and authorizing, such an event,is pink.

As I said, every state has such a law and has had one for decades...if not centuries.

As unfortunate as this incident was it looks to me as if the cops (and the mental health worker) were within their rights...from start to finish.

Clear case of copicide. She begged him to kill her then did what it took to get her wish. Case closed.

She pointed a gun at armed cops and is dead. It was a gun, not a tv remote mistaken for a gun.
