Gesundheit machine

I know we're discussing a very serious topic here, but, being of mostly German descent, and hearing "Gesundheit" many a time with family, that really made me laugh! I to this day still say "Gesundheit!" when someone near me coughs or sneezes.

That CDC definition is a conservative definition of exposure.

It may look good in a medical textbook, but could be a big fail in the real world.

I am beginning to see the problem with CDC...

I did a little post on a separate thread but I’ll bring it over here because it has the links to what you’re referring to. Note also, there are primates in the same area. And that 12 residents of Kunming were some of the first confirmed cases of Covid and a thousand cases came from the area.

Repost of http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3820124/posts?page=53#53

what if it wasn’t Wuhan out, but Wuhan in? Brought into Wuhan, from an infected cave tourist or even an infected vendor of flowers ?
“Vegetable growers from Sichuan and Guizhou provinces are predominant in Kunming’s vegetable markets, but the local people are quite happy that it should be so. As a vegetable or fruit vendor from Sichuan can rapidly make enough money to buy a house and settle in Kunming...— fresh vegetables are available all year round in Kunming. The same also applies to fresh flowers. Flower growers in Kunming most like the autumn and winter seasons, as this is when no flowers grow in the majority of other cities in China. They consequently wholesale large quantities of flowers to big cities in other provinces...

I agree, but without coughing and sneezing aerosol spread is much less effective.

Does account for a lot of things that hand-washing is meant to prevent though...

I think we under appreciate the role of fomites in the asymptomatic spread. Hand rails, elevator buttons, ATMs, touch screen displays, light switches, door knobs...

I mentioned previously about how hard it is not to touch ones face. My wife started wearing gloves again while examining patients. She does not touch her face with gloves on. It was habit garnered decades ago while doing a public health payback.

Simply, the contact of the glove reminds you and is a helpful training tool.

We watched the videos coming out of China. They had masks on, but no one had gloves. Worse, everyone was engrossed in their fomites contaminated smart phones.

And that increased travel also coincided with increased capability to modify viruses. Just a coincidence, no doubt. Or perhaps an unfortunate positive feedback.

Seems to me part of the bat, or pangolin, or whatever, corona virus RNA(?) sequence was intentionally spliced into a human corona virus during research. It has nothing to do with natural mutation. I’m sure there are legitimate reasons for doing this, but no matter: it slips out of the lab somehow.

But that’s probably something which can’t be claimed definitively, so the scientists trying to figure out what happened hedge their disclosures - they don’t want to implicate any particular research team with something they’re not sure of, they just say “it happened through mutation”.

Or others that state as fact that COVID-19 is aerosolized, etc.

I've seen several studies that say Lower Respiratory Tract viral infections tend to to be associated with aerosolization, and other coronaviruses like SARS and MERS have been shown to be aerosolized, including detecting the virus RNA in sampled air and cases that cannot be explained by other methods. It shouldn't be a huge leap to assume COVID-19 might be transferred via aerosol until proven otherwise. That doesn't mean that aerosol is the predominant transmission method, or even a common one. The CDC is recommending Airborne Infection Isolation Room (AIIR) protocols and Airborne Precautions for COVID-19. Considering the history of coronaviruses, I'm not sure why there is so much push back against the possibility that this little bug can be airborne. I wouldn't treat it as fact, but would assume for now. Also agree that some level of containment is still possible, and needs to be a primary goal. If for no other reason than to slow the rate of infection and keep outbreaks manageable. We aren't going to be like Singapore, but that doesn't mean complete failure.

Hand rails, elevator buttons, ATMs, touch screen displays, light switches, door knobs...

Exactly.

That is why the containment protocols do not make any sense.

It is almost impossible to track the people who touched those things in any reasonably busy building over the course of even an hour.
