What’s keeping Trump from eliminating Walters’ position and laying him off? Decisions on medical evacuations should be approved or disapproved by the CDC, and not the State Department.

real decisions that matter will still be made by the head of a directorate that is a subsection of a bureau that you never heard of, but that has a budget in the hundreds of millions, a small army as its disposal, and will follow whatever the protocol is.

This is how the country is really run. And that’s the problem.

So what does Greenfield suggest as the alternative model?

Every operational, and in this case medical, decision of government should be made by the White House?

There are not enough events yet to hang it around Walters neck. The timing needs to be right, even though no matter what happens it will be Trump’s fault. Should Trump have a replacement ready, the follow-up decisions by Replacement better solve the problem, and not exacerbate it. Virus control is difficult.

In the drill, 11 simulated patients were flown in specially designed bio-containment containers on a pair of 747s and three smaller Gulfstream jets from Sierra Leone to Washington’s Dulles International Airport...
“The scope of this exercise is unprecedented and a testament to the lessons learned and then changes made in the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak,” said Dr. William Walters, the managing director for operational medicine at the State Department, which coordinates the evacuations until patients clear U.S. customs and immigration. He said the U.S. was “largely unprepared” for the Ebola crisis three years ago...

As a private citizen, Trump scathingly criticized Obama for his response to the Ebola outbreak, even though health experts credited U.S. efforts for helping resolve the crisis. On Twitter and in numerous interviews, Trump called Obama “incompetent” and “nuts” and demanded that evacuations be halted, saying they were dangerous and a threat to public health in America.
Trump also called numerous times for a ban on flights to the U.S. from Ebola-infected nations, and a visa ban on citizens of those countries

As time goes on it is becoming apparent that this new bug is even less deadly than the flu. Unless you’ve got Chicoms running your health care system, of course.

Is it though? Per the Johns Hopkins numbers (173 deaths, 792 recoveries), the current fatality rate for the new virus, excluding the Chinese numbers, is at 17.9%. Which is about 35x higher than the average flu CFR.
