You need an HDMI Audio De-embedder. HDMI goes in and out but the audio is separated such as the 3.5mm TRS, RCA or captive screw.

I got one from monoprice and it worked well. It was an hdmi spitter that could be reversed into a selector.

Cheap.

Go to Amazon and enter “hdmi to hdmi and 3.5mm” to the search and you’ll get a bunch of options. For example:

If nothing else, you could run it through a cheap old TV that has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

(From someone who has the 3.5mm jack from their big 4K screen heading into a tube pre-amp, Carver amp, and then, ahem, large speakers, you get the idea)

Best by far option is to come from the toslink (laser audio port) port on your newer equipment to a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) and then feed the analog signal into your into your older stuff via RCA cables. You can actually get really really good audio quality that way. Here is a cheap one I run that has been great.

https://www.parts-express.com/dac-digital-to-analog-audio-converter-optical-—coaxial-—usb—180-998

Input: S/PDIF optical/coaxial 44.1 - 192 kHz • Sample rate: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz • Input: USB 1.1 compatible with 2.0 • Sample rate: 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz • Output: Stereo line level via 2 RCA jacks • Output impedance: 10K ohm • Output voltage: 1.35 Vrms • Headphone: 3.5 mm stereo jack • Headphone output power: 60 mW into 16 ohms, 30 mW into 32 ohms • Power: 5 VDC, 500 mA

I know my audio stuff. This is by far your best option. (I run this stuff with lossless audio from computer to old silver faced dual monoblock amp that weighs 70 lbs. (If the power supply is tiny your amp sucks)) It sounds flawless.

There is no setup. Plug it in and it works.

Short video on this thing.

I forgot... there is one thing to setup. Turn off dolby output on whatever you are bringing the sound out of and turn it to PCM. (Both communicate full surround info out but this thing needs the PCM format and not dolby format.)

Like I said, this is an odd request, but you don't know many have screwed up the A/V cabinet. It's not really their fault because the equipment is very old. I'm just trying to simply things for everyone.

Yes, precisely. One cannot more input on thread post for adaptation but use the other one if you need to.

Yes, that should work. I am using this one.....

I split analog audio off of HDMI to send to amplifiers for other rooms. The digital HDMI audio is still there, too.

garyb, norcaljoe, and Mr.Blond all have what you need. The other ones people posted look to be RCA out only. Which is doable, but if you’re already setup for an 1/8” in, then don’t start adding more stuff if you’re not sure what’s going on.

jdsteel’s is an RCA out model, and LTGM in post 10 is overly complex and not even anything that you need - her thing doesn’t even have an hdmi input.

So just follow one of the first three’s links, or search for your own “hdmi audio de-embedder”. Amazon usually has cheap enough stuff, Newegg might have a good sale, and Monoprice is generally pretty cheap. Or, your local Fry’s or Microcenter should have one. Wally World/Target I doubt would.

Based on your description, this should do it;

4K HDMI Audio Extractor, HDMI to HDMI + Optical Toslink SPDIF + 3.5mm AUX Stereo Audio Out, HDMI Audio Converter Adapter Splitter Support 4K@60Hz Full HD 1080P 3D
