According to reports, Disney cut a kissing scene from its upcoming Chinese release of Mulan, because Chinese censors demanded the change.
The original cut of the film included a romantic scene in which the lead character Mulan (Liu Yifei) shared a kiss with her love interest, Chen Honghui (Yoson An).
But Chinese officials reportedly told Disney that the scene doesnt feel right to the Chinese people, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
It was very beautiful, but the China office went, No, you cant, that doesnt feel right to the Chinese people. So we took it out. director Niki Caro told the paper.
Hollywood has for many decades railed against censorship in the U.S., claiming that it is a strike both against a filmmakers First Amendment rights, not to mention his artistic integrity.
But now, it appears that Hollywood is jumping immediately to the self-censorship when cuts are demanded by China, one of Hollywoods biggest markets.
As to Mulan, the film had already irked Chinese officials when star Liu Yifei announced support for the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.
The rising star took to Chinas version of Twitter last year saying, I support the Hong Kong police; you can beat me up now. What a shame for Hong Kong and adding the hashtag #IAlsoSupportTheHongKongPolice.
Some in China called for a boycott of the film over Yifei statement.
However, eventually, the controversy blew over.

That’s interesting. A few years ago, there was a video company that did edits on demand to DVD’s of films that purchasers wanted trimmed. I gather that a lot of the business consisted of cutting out explicit sex scenes for parents who thought the movie overall was suitable viewing for their kids, but that Hollywood had gone too far on the sex. The studios sued on the grounds that this was an impermissible alteration of their creative product. If I recall correctly, the studios won in court. I thought the judgment was absurd. This was not a case of consumers trying to censor the product that was being sold; it was a case of consumers, post purchase, wanting to modify what was now their own property to make it suitable for private use by their families. The courts disagreed. But now, China commands and Disney jumps through hoops. Perhaps the studios will now reconsider and allow individual consumers to assert some control.
This is not surprising. In Korea they have restrictions on kissing, and the actors can only do the “frozen kiss,” where the lips can touch but nothing else can happen, if you know what I mean.
In any case, foreign edits of American movies have gone on since movies have been made. In some cases, the American version of a foreign film was the one that was censored.
Good. I’ll buy the Chinese version.
Very recent example of Korean “frozen kiss,” from Dr. Romantic 2:

It’s not much of a kiss.
Oooh, very bad for social harmony!!
I’d give odds that you are right—and the writer of the article doesn’t want to hint that Chinese culture is homophobic for fear of seeming racist.
Journalism is dead.
That’s an oldie but goodie from the past. Glad you kept that link.
For a long time FR didn’t allow any WTH threads. Did that policy change? Or does no one care anymore.
Same in India. Public displays of affection are pretty much taboo there. Richard Gere got himself into a whole lot of hot water a few years back when he planted one on some Bollywood actress at a press event.
Was that CGI?
I hope so, i would love to see all of the hollywood actors out of work in the near future..

So they accommodate the ChComs but you offend US Christians no problem.
But now, China commands and Disney jumps through hoops.

When China says “Jump,” Hollywood AND the tech industry asks, “How high?”
That’s for sure. . .and there is a week in June or July that isa homsexual week, where homosexuals mob the park and families who are unaware of the homosexuals taking over the park Disney is not sympathetic at all. So, spend the week with a bunch of loud and proud or leave and don’t get your money back.
Also, just prior to that week, the Disney ship is mobbed by homosexuals the week prior and when they disembark, they head over to the park.
My son worked there and the week in the park is nasty. with “ass-less chaps” and guys with collars around their neck being led around by their “special partner” and other such nonsense dress (undress). The park brings in addition spotlights to illuminate the darker corners of the park.
