You forgot to mention that given that the Chinese numbers seem most likely to be produced by the same sorts of people who produce numbers for Bernie, we have no reason whatsoever to conclude that China isn’t being decimated.
The South Korea and Diamond Princess numbers look to be the first case studies that are going to give us solid information on what goes on here. But I think that we are going to need 3-8 weeks before things have progressed enough there to have stuff based on demonstrable history.
By then, it seems possible that the solid data will be telling us where two thirds of the world is going, whether they want to go or not.
In the mean time, just remember that the flu kills a zillion people a year, and that China wants to trash its economy as an early April fools joke, and everyone can sleep happy waiting for the tooth fairy to come.
Just imagine what the murder/mayhem rate would be in this country if this virus gets going...

I grew up in the backwoods of Oregon in a valley that was full of good folk who were light on the education and perhaps not the sorts of people that non-Irish Bostonians and the traditional elite of Philadelphia would hang out with.
Perhaps a decade ago I made contact with a guy I had grown up with who had gone on and made something of himself, and he said that whenever he was asked what was it like where he grew up, he referenced Deliverance.
This is the new, happy version of those events. When a person gets sick and tests positive. They are given the choice to enter quarantine or stay home. If they stay home they cannot ever leave. The door is sealed. They are fed through window. If door seal broke, checked daily, they are forceably taken to quarantine. They can stay at home for an undetermined length of time. See. Everyone us happy according to Chinese. Although I have read it only takes one sick person in building. Then entire building sealed at entrance.
Well, at least they aren’t then setting the building on fire. That has been done before....
An early report had large number of pets dying in Wuhan. Chinese then started killing pets. But could have been to save resources and as a precaution.
Saw a video later taken down of a Chinese man who had hanged himself. Was hanging outside his apartment in a high rise.
