Here’s Why Intermittent Fasting Is Suddenly So Popular in Philly, According to Nutrition Pros
Philadelphia Magazine ^ | 02/25/2020 | Laura Brzyski·

Note: This post addresses intermittent fasting as a diet, not fasting done for religious or cultural purposes. You should consult with a doctor, nutritionist, or dietician before trying intermittent fasting, or any diet. A few weeks ago, a group of friends and I were trying to plan a fairly low-key wine and cheese night. As if trying to work around everyone’s schedules isn’t already difficult enough, we found ourselves faced with a new challenge: one of our pals was intermittent fasting and their “eating window” closed right when the rest of us could get together. Sigh.

A pretty good overview/introduction to one of the latest diet fads. I still think the everything in moderation, common sense diet is best but some people may find this article interesting and informative.

:: their “eating window” closed right when the rest of us could get together. Sigh. ::
So, WE should accommodate for someone else’s CHOICE?
How about: “Dude. We are getting together at a time we know you have decided fast. We respect that and you are certainly welcome to join us. Please RSVP.”
If they are committed to their “fasting regimen”, they should be able to be around food without being tempted to eat, otherwise, it isn’t a diet, it’s a punishment.

I honestly thought this “intermittent fasting” trend was going to be tied to people not having enough money to eat every day until their next paycheck.

A logical assumption. But it doesn't explain the fat people at the grocery store using food stamps.

But, back on topic...intermittent fasting is kinda fun and beneficial to your health. I heartily recommend reading The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung. It really is a fascinating read.

Tough beans.

The friend can come and not eat or just not come.

I don't see that everyone has to rearrange their schedule to accommodate one other person's personal preferences.

Or the *friend* could just adjust their fasting schedule to start eating later and so be able to go later into the night to avoid social conflicts.

Intermittent fasting is practice for the Bernie Sanders’ socialist diet.

I for one can say this is not a fad.

I have had GI issues for years/decades. In my 50’s I resolved myself to know where the nearest bathroom is after every meal. It was the cold hard truth.

I started this in January along with my GI doc. She said that this would be an easier way to track what I am eating because my window is only 8 hours and eating is planned.

I was able to start narrowing down what is causing the problems and my life does not revolve around a bathroom anymore. I am loosing weight too.

I see a trend of “incipient vapidity” in articles in lib newrags and mags...such as this, the NYT, the Atlantic, etc.

Brings to mind the question, “Are these folks really that shallow?”

And the answer screams, “Of course, they all voted for Dorkbama.”

That brings us back to my opening question?
Are we so cuckolded as to be afraid to change OUR habits so as not to offend another?
That’s not “love each other”, that is “social tyranny”.

I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for a couple of years. Not once has it impeded my social life or caused an inconvenience for any other person. It’s just an easy way to control intake, and it probably has some other benefits over simple calorie restriction.

Most people just skip breakfast and stop consuming after supper the night before. Stop gobbing at 8 and don’t eat again until noon the next day. That’s not exactly a radical idea. You’ll be asleep for a big part of that time. Breakfast is highly overrated. If a social event falls outside of your eating window, so what? Get back on track the next day. The article tries to make it all sound impossible. It isn’t.

Just restricting your intake to a certain “window” won’t cause weight loss if you overeat during that window. Missing a meal seems impossible for people who are addicted to “food”. If you double up to catch up, you won’t lose any weight.

My trip to the store yesterday tells me that an awful lot of people could go multiple months on just water and salt without ever being in any danger of starving. Health care is the #1 issue for many voters. Well, fat people need a lot more health care, so that makes sense.

Not a very balanced article: all the “experts” are dietitians who are too busy promoting their own programs. IF is a direct threat to their livelihood so naturally they will take a negative view.

I wish people would stop calling it a diet.

First, there isn’t any caloric deficit required to do it. It’s not WHAT you eat, but WHEN you eat. Second, you cannot do 2 diets at one time, but you can do whatever diet you are currently on, such as Keto, while also doing intermittent fasting.

If you are trying to educate yourself on IF and the article you are reading refers to it as a diet, stop reading it because the person who wrote it is not educated enough on it to properly identify what it actually is.

Or the friend could simply skip IF for a day! I’ve been doing IF for close to a year. 30 lbs lighter and my blood pressure has dropped 40 points. But Sunday is my regularly scheduled cheat day. And if I get together with friends for a party, that becomes a cheat day too!

No big deal. Just resume modest fasting the next day.

Let’s talk about that eating window. IF is most effective when you fast from 16-20 hours a day. My normal eating window is from noon to 6 pm and I fast for 18 hours. But let’s say I go out to eat with friends or family on the weekend, the chances of getting my food before 6 are slim. I can adjust my eating window to cut off at 7 pm or even 8 pm and still get a 16+ hour fast. That’s beauty of it, you can adjust it to your day to day lifestyle and what works best for you.

Pretty poor overview of intermittent fasting. If anyone wants to know more about it, I suggest this video by Jason Fung:

In which direction?

The group or the friend?

I am so sick of the majority being expected to rearrange their lives to accommodate the minority.

In this case, with everyone working, people are NOT going to all be able or willing to get off work early to eat on the friend’s schedule.

Depends on your window, as relates to weight loss and overeating.

If your window is an hour, you can still lose weight. You may have miserable stomach aches though.

Very true. If your window is only an hour, then it’s really one meal a day (OMAD). It would be difficult to overeat in an hour, and the body’s ability to absorb and process the calories does have a limit. A 24 hour fast isn’t really all that difficult. I do recommend staying busy.
